The lack of adequate funding for legal aid is unacceptable. It is past time for the provincial government to raise the legal aid tariff for the first time since 2008. The Justice minister’s dismissive treatment of the private bar (which handles the vast majority of legal aid files in Manitoba) is nothing short of a travesty. This job action is being taken to highlight the urgency of the situation.
Private defence attorneys in Manitoba are refusing to represent legal aid clients in bail court, as part of job action in a dispute over pay and workload, the Criminal Defence Lawyers Association of Manitoba president says.
