We are grateful to have been selected for the RCMP’s Family Violence Initiative Fund.

We are pleased to share that Reclaiming Our Ways, an Indigenous Restorative Justice Program through Anisininew Okimawin Inc., was successful in obtaining $23,516.49 of funding through the RCMP’s Family Violence Initiative Fund.

Reclaiming Our Ways will bring culturally grounded workshops and community engagement events to the Island Lake communities of Wasagamack, Garden Hill, Red Sucker Lake and St Theresa Point. The program aims to raise awareness of family and domestic violence, support both victims and offenders, promote healthier relationships and provide access to resources and supports.

The RCMP is proud to support this initiative through community engagement, information sharing and ongoing collaboration to help build safer, healthier communities

We have expanded our program and have hired an Anisininew Court Worker, Madeline! ⭐️

The Anisininew Court Worker will attend court to help Island Lake members with:
✅Guidance and information about court processes.
✅Understanding your court papers, conditions and other documents.
✅Translating to the Anisininew language and ensure you understand everything.
✅Assist in making the court experience less stressful.
✅Connecting you to legal aid, victim services and other resources.
✅A safe space to talk if you are feeling overwhelmed, worried or confused.

The Anisininew Court Worker will be working in Winnipeg and will travel to Garden Hill, St. Theresa Point and circuit courts.

Why do we have Court Workers❓
Court Workers are here to ensure Island Lake members are receiving fair and equitable treatment while navigating the criminal justice system.

Note: The Court Worker can NOT give you legal advice. However, they may help with giving you useful information or refer you to legal aid or a lawyer. They will assist with the whole process, including filling out legal aid papers and finding a lawyer.

Introducing our program, Reclaiming Our Ways‼️⭐️

We are a Anisininew Restorative Justice Program that helps individuals deal with their charges outside of the traditional court process.

Rather than proceeding through the traditional Criminal Court system, individuals may have their charges diverted to our program. Participants complete an intake and attend culturally relevant prevention workshops. These workshops may include traditional teachings, cultural activities, sweat lodges and other land-based learning opportunities.

Our program is recognized and supported by the courts. Upon successful completion of the intake process and any assigned workshops, the Crown will review the file and determine whether the charges will be stayed or dismissed. This can be a more positive and supportive way in healing and repairing the harm caused by the offence for individuals to address their charges while avoiding the stress and uncertainty of court proceedings.

We have an open-door policy and welcome referrals from all backgrounds.

Our program will meet participants where they're at. We will travel to offices or other agreed upon locations to complete intakes and deliver workshops when appropriate. We also can complete the process virtually (Teams, Zoom, Facebook video call).
