The Bank of Canada has held the overnight rate at 2.25% today, September 2, 2026. This is the seventh consecutive decision with no change.

Stability is good for buyers.

Buyers who have been waiting for rates to fall substantially may now start realizing that waiting indefinitely could mean missing opportunities. A stable 2.25% Bank rate gives the market more predictability.

Mortgage rates are the bigger story.

The Bank of Canada controls the overnight rate, but fixed mortgage rates are heavily influenced by bond yields. So today’s hold does not automatically mean fixed mortgage rates will fall. In fact, Canadian bond yields have recently been elevated.

Here looks like market expecting a gradual real-estate recovery rather than a sudden boom.

The economy grew at a 3.3% annualized pace in Q2, which gives the Bank less reason to cut aggressively. At the same time, inflation has reached about 3%, the top of the Bank’s target range, which limits its ability to stimulate the economy through cuts.
