At Mitousis Family Law Group, we believe in lifting up organizations setting the standard for access to justice.

Luke's Place Support & Resource Centre for Women & Children, located in Oshawa, Ontario, is Canada’s only stand-alone family law support centre of excellence — an award-winning leader shaping the intersection of family law and violence prevention.

Luke’s Place was founded because of the tragic death of Luke, a 3-year-old boy, killed by his father during a first unsupervised access visit. Following Luke’s death, professionals and survivors in Durham Region, including the founding Executive Director of Luke’s Place, Carol Barkwell, began to meet together, to explore solutions for addressing the difficulties experienced by woman abuse survivors and their children.

Founded out of this tragic loss, Luke’s Place has evolved from a local response into a nationally recognized force for policy reform, research, and legal education.

Their leadership is making big impacts:

* The Ministry of the Attorney General developed Ontario’s Family Court Support Worker program directly from the Luke’s Place service model.

* They provide specialized training for Legal Aid lawyers, court personnel, and frontline advocates across Canada on trauma-informed family law practices.

* Partnering with academic institutions, Luke’s Place actively conducts research and advocates for legislative and policy reforms to keep children and survivors safe in court.

* Their work has been recognized with the Attorney General’s Victim Services Award of Distinction, the Law Foundation of Ontario’s Guthrie Award, and the Law Society of Ontario’s Laura Legge Award.

Effective legal advocacy goes beyond individual courtrooms — it relies on systemic knowledge, continuous reform, and trauma-informed expertise.

We applaud the Luke's Place team for their groundbreaking contributions to family law practice across Canada.

A historic milestone for the Manitoba legal community! ⚖️

We are incredibly proud to see our former Chief Justice of the Court of King's Bench, Glenn Joyal, appointed to the Supreme Court of Canada. This marks the first time a Manitoba jurist has been appointed to our nation's highest court in 20 years.

From a family law perspective, Chief Justice Joyal’s tenure in Manitoba will be remembered for a deep, sustained focus on modernizing court operations and prioritizing access to justice. He took a hard look at traditional court processes through a public-interest lens, seeking to re-envision how the court system serves families going through complex transitions.

This vision led to significant, structural shifts—most notably the implementation of Manitoba's new case flow model, which introduced early intervention, intentional triaging, and new procedural pathways designed to help self-represented litigants and families navigate a notoriously difficult system more effectively.

Throughout his years on the bench, Chief Justice Joyal remained deeply engaged with the family law bar, showing a willingness to tackle systemic challenges head-on. We congratulate him on this well-deserved appointment and look forward to seeing his nuanced, forward-looking leadership style shape Canadian jurisprudence at the highest level.

Congratulations, Justice Joyal! 👏

A truly historic moment for the Manitoba justice system. ⚖️🪶

Congratulations to Judge Jerilee Ryle on her historic appointment as Manitoba’s—and Canada's—very first Associate Chief Judge of Reconciliation.

This newly created position within the Provincial Court of Manitoba is a vital, groundbreaking initiative. In this role, Associate Chief Judge Ryle will lead efforts to ensure our court administration better reflects and respects Indigenous traditions, values, and lived experiences, while working directly with First Nations, Inuit, and Métis communities to build a more culturally responsive system.

We congratulate also Provincial Court Chief Judge Ryan Rolston, whose vision and advocacy were instrumental in making this dedicated position a reality. Systemic progress requires deliberate leadership, and Chief Judge Rolston’s push to formalize this role ensures that reconciliation remains a structural priority for our courts, rather than a side-desk initiative.

A big thank you as well to all of the dedicated advocates, community leaders, and justice system partners who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to champion this change.

Real progress in addressing the systemic challenges in our justice system begins with listening, partnership, and meaningful action. Our firm is incredibly heartened by this initiative, and we look forward to seeing how Associate Chief Judge Ryle’s leadership lights the path forward for justice in Manitoba.

Reflecting on an incredible milestone for Manitoba’s legal community! ✨

On May 7–8, Law(yer) Strong hosted our very first Lawyer Well-Being Summit at the beautiful Elkhorn Resort in Riding Mountain National Park. We brought together a diverse group of voices from the north, south, east, and west—including legal community leaders, board members, practicing lawyers, and representatives from the Law Society of Manitoba, the Manitoba Bar Association, the Faculty of Law at the University of Manitoba, and current law students.

Together, we tackled some heavy topics. The dynamic energy and thoughtfulness in the room fueled immediate ideas and solutions on how to improve mental health, professional culture, and lawyer well-being across our province.

Thanks to all of our participants.

Our firm was proud to sponsor a beautiful milestone last month: the MILSA - Manitoba Indigenous Law Students Association Indigenous Graduation Blanketing Ceremony. 🎓✨

The Blanketing Ceremony is a deeply meaningful tradition, symbolizing community support, respect, and wrapping the graduates in warmth and protection as they take their next monumental steps into their legal careers.

At Mitousis Family Law Group, we believe that a truly just legal system must reflect, honour, and be shaped by the diverse communities it serves. To ensure that everyone is treated with dignity —especially when navigating the deeply personal challenges of family law — we need the vital voices, unique perspectives, and leadership of Indigenous legal professionals.

To the incredible MILSA graduates: Your hard work, resilience, and leadership are fundamental to the future of the legal profession in Manitoba and beyond. We are so proud to celebrate you, and we cannot wait to see the immense impact you will make.

Congratulations to all the graduates, and thank you to MILSA for organizing such a powerful and inspiring ceremony!

When you hear "Rule of Law," you might think of parliament buildings or high-level politics. But as family lawyers, we see the Rule of Law protecting people right where it matters most: at home. 🏠✨

We are proud to support the Ours to Protect campaign because we know that fair, stable laws are the glue that keeps families safe during difficult life transitions.

In family law, the Rule of Law means:
🔹 Equity: Ensuring vulnerable people are taken care of and spouses are treated as equals when a relationship ends.
🔹 Protection: Clear rules that put the best interests of children first.
🔹 Dignity: An evolving legal system that recognizes and grants equal rights to contemporary families, protecting everyone’s Charter rights.

The Rule of Law isn't just about big systems—it’s about the everyday rights that protect you and your kids. It’s . 🇨🇦
