If you travel a lot or have a chronic medical condition you may already have someone designated to step in should you be unable to manage everything personally. For those who don't hava a valid Power of Attorney (POA) it is important to note that you pick the person, be it a spouse, an adult child or a best friend. If you don't have a POA the court may have to decide for you, and the expense of the court application will be charged to you. A Power of Attorney can kick in following a specified event or be unconditional. Again, your choice. Getting the document in place now will be much less expensive than paying for a court application and hearing.

The insurance company for the at fault party may contact you shortly after your accident and offer you a sum of money to sign off against their insured. The amount is ofter high enough to be very tempting. Beware of this practice as the long term impact of accepting money may leave you without being able to collect for your injury should it last longer than initially expected.

If you are offered a settlement, it's time to make an appointment with Michelle Brown to discuss the terms and overall advisability of accepting money at this stage of proceedings.

Do you have retired baby boomer parents that own a home free and clear? This puts them firmly in line to be part of the great wealth transfer where grown chidren expect to inherit their assets.

The alternative, and our personal preference, is to encourage them to spend it all and die destitute. If they have nothing left, there is nothing to fight about.

If an individual retains us to put forward an injury claim and that individual in Intestate (has no Will) the claim will be stayed until someone is willing to apply for a Certificate of Appointment. This is generally a close family member who will need to assure the court that they are the best option. It takes time, effort and expense.

Don't put this burden on your family, prepare a basic Will wiith us or a lawyer where you reside.

If you are purchasing travel insurance for you summer vacation we have learned that many large insurers, including Manulife, Sun Life and Desjarden, are adding the current jet fuel shortage as a "known event". This means that if your vacation is cancelled or delayed by the lack of fuel to get your plane off the ground, you are not covered for this circumstance.

Read and understand your policy. If you know the cost vs. coverage implications you are less likely to be caught unaware if something goes wrong during your travels.
