Demerit Points Aren’t the Whole Story

Think a ticket with no demerit points means it won’t matter to your insurance?

Not necessarily.

Insurance companies are generally concerned with convictions on your driving record, not simply the number of demerit points attached to them. A conviction could still affect your insurance even when no points are involved.

Before paying a traffic ticket, make sure you understand the potential consequences.

📵 Distracted Driving Can Be as Simple as Holding Your Phone.

Many drivers are surprised to learn that in Ontario, simply holding a hand-held device while driving is against the law—even if you're stopped at a red light or sitting in traffic.

A distracted driving conviction can result in:
• Significant fines
• Demerit points (for most fully licensed drivers)
• Licence suspensions
• Increased insurance premiums

The safest choice is to put your phone away before you start driving. If you need to use GPS or make a call, make sure you're using a properly mounted device or a hands-free system as permitted by law.

If you've been charged with distracted driving, don't rush to pay the ticket before understanding your options.

Street Justice Paralegal provides experienced representation for drivers across Southern Ontario and is here to help you navigate the legal process with confidence.

🇨🇦 **New Ontario Laws Take Effect on Canada Day – Here's What Changes**

Several new laws and regulations officially came into effect across Ontario on **July 1**, bringing important changes for tenants, drivers, healthcare, and public safety.

🏠 **Tenant Rights**
Tenants now have the legal right to install a **window or portable air conditioner** if their landlord doesn't provide one, as long as certain conditions are met.

🏥 **Healthcare**
The eligible age for publicly funded **colorectal cancer screening** has been lowered from **50 to 45**. Pharmacists can also treat more minor illnesses and administer additional publicly funded vaccines.

🚗 **Auto Insurance**
Ontario drivers can now choose to opt out of some accident benefits to reduce insurance costs. However, experts warn this could leave drivers with less financial protection after a serious accident.

🪪 **Driver's Licence Rules**
New residents from countries without a driver's licence exchange agreement with Ontario must now pass a **G2 road test** and wait at least one year before qualifying for a full **G license**.

⚖️ **Other Changes**
The new rules also strengthen the government's ability to collect unpaid bail debts, expand the powers of certain transit special constables, and prohibit registered s*x offenders from legally changing their names.

📌 These changes are expected to impact millions of Ontarians, with new rules aimed at improving healthcare access, tenant protections, road safety, and public security.
