June is National Indigenous History Month, a time to recognize and celebrate the diverse cultures, histories, and contributions of Indigenous peoples across Canada. It is a crucial opportunity for us to deepen our understanding and acknowledge the importance of Indigenous heritage in shaping our nation.

Throughout history, Indigenous peoples have played a significant role in shaping our land, culture, and society. Their ancestral wisdom, resilience, and deep connection to the natural world have provided invaluable contributions to our collective heritage. It is essential to acknowledge and honor their unique perspectives, knowledge, and rich traditions.

National Indigenous History Month is not only about celebrating the achievements and cultural diversity of Indigenous communities, but it is also a chance for us to reflect on the historical injustices and systemic barriers they have faced. It is a time to amplify their voices and work towards a more equitable and inclusive future for all.

At Swiftsure Law, we recognize the importance of advocating for justice, equality, and reconciliation. This month, we stand in solidarity with Indigenous communities and pledge our commitment to promote understanding, respect, and reconciliation in all aspects of our work.

Together, let's create a future that honors and respects the rights, cultures, and contributions of Indigenous peoples. Happy National Indigenous History Month!

Training for judges about domestic violence is one step closer to becoming mandatory. According to a recent CBC news article, the Canadian government is taking proactive measures to ensure judges receive proper training to better understand domestic violence and how to handle cases involving it.

It is hoped that Keira's Law will lead to greater awareness and understanding of domestic violence in our communities. Advocating for victims of domestic violence and ensuring they receive the justice and protection they deserve is an important issue that we, as a society, need to address.

If you or someone you know is a victim of domestic violence, please do not hesitate to seek legal advice. Together, we can work towards putting an end to domestic violence and creating safer, more equitable communities for all.

Meet Adam B. Pawlovich.

Adam B. Pawlovich joined the Swiftsure Law team in August 2022 as an Associate Lawyer to complement the litigation team. He graduated from the University of Saskatchewan in 2016 and was called to the B.C. bar in 2017 after completing his articles at a small boutique firm.

Adam has practiced primarily in the area of family law since being called to the bar and has conducted trials at both the Provincial Court and Supreme Court of
British Columbia. Adam brings his practical approach to solving family law problems by focusing on what matters most: the best interests of the children. Adam is a strong advocate for parents who desire practical advice during one of the most chaotic times in their lives.

Adam also brings over a decade of experience as an educator and IT consultant with WorkSafeBC. His professional activities include acting as the legislative liaison for the Canadian Bar Association, the British Columbia Branch immigration section, and member of the Victoria Bar Association and Law Society of BC.

Adam and his young family enjoy all the Victoria community has to offer in terms of outdoor activities and a community mindset. Adam looks forward to bringing his prairie charm in providing guidance and good representation to his clients.

Exciting news for all pet owners in British Columbia.

A proposal for new guidance is being made in British Columbia to assist judges in determining what becomes of a family pet during a couple's separation.

The proposed change to family law would treat pets as more than just objects, recognizing them as valued members of our families. This means that custody disputes over pets during divorce or separation proceedings will be treated with the same care and consideration as those involving children. Let's continue to advocate for our furry friends and prioritize their well-being in all aspects of our lives
