You Have The Right To Remain FABULOUS: Victoria Pride 2026

Victoria Pride is one of my favourite days of the year.

It is joyful, colourful, loud, and full of celebration. But beneath the music, the laughter, and the rainbow flags is something much deeper.

This past Sunday, I had the privilege of marching with the Canadian Bar Association – Victoria Branch. Standing alongside lawyers, professors, legal professionals, families, friends, allies, and members of the LGBTQ2S+ community was a powerful reminder that Pride has always been more than a parade. It is a statement that every person deserves dignity, equality, and the freedom to live openly as themselves.

Now more than ever, that message matters.

Across North America and around the world, we are seeing renewed efforts to roll back the rights of LGBTQ2S+ people—particularly transgender and gender-diverse people. Progress is never guaranteed. Rights that have been fought for can be challenged, and inclusion cannot be taken for granted.

That is why Pride matters.

It is a reminder that q***r people, trans people, and allies must continue to stand together. Not only to defend equality under the law, but to ensure equality is experienced in everyday life—in our schools, workplaces, communities, healthcare system, and justice system.

As a lawyer, I believe deeply in the rule of law and equal access to justice. As a proud member of the LGBTQ2S+ community, I also know that legal rights alone are not enough. True equality means creating communities where people are safe, respected, and able to live authentically without fear.

I am proud to have built a legal practice that welcomes all families and all people. Everyone deserves to be treated with dignity, compassion, and respect, regardless of their sexual orientation, gender identity, or family structure.

Thank you to the Canadian Bar Association – Victoria Branch for organizing our participation, and to everyone who marched, volunteered, cheered, and showed up.

Pride is a celebration of how far we’ve come.

It is also a commitment to keep moving forward—together.

Happy Pride, Victoria. 🌈

🎓✨ Congratulations to the UVic Law Class of 2026! ✨⚖️

It was such a delight to serve as the Alumni Representative and have the opportunity to congratulate this year’s graduates of the University of Victoria Faculty of Law.

Also a very special congrats to Deva Middleton, who is part of my family, who grad’ed from U of T Law in Ontario as well.

This one was particularly special for me—not only is it my 20 years anniversary of when I graduated from UVic Law; I also got to watch some of my own students from the Family Law course grad 🎉

My message to the Class of 2026: there is no single path in law and no single definition of success.

Stay curious. Take some chances. Follow the opportunities that excite you. Find your own way to use your skills to make a difference.

Some of the best parts of your career may be the ones you never could have planned for.

A huge congratulations to the UVic Law Class of 2026! Welcome to the alumni community—I can’t wait to see where your law degrees take you. 🎓🎉⚖️

I was honoured to be a presenter at the Osgoode 2026 Fertility Law Program as part of the Cross-Country Fertility Law Check-Up, where I covered developments in fertility law across British Columbia and the North, including Yukon, the Northwest Territories, and Nunavut.

One of the things I love most about building my practice is the flexibility it provides. I’ve intentionally structured my law practice so I can work remotely and continue travelling — and this presentation was a perfect example of that. I was presenting at a Canadian legal conference while sitting outside my hotel in Guatemala (with the tropical heat very much winning the battle that day!).

We discussed emerging trends in fertility law, parentage reform, surrogacy, IVF funding developments, and how the law is continuing to evolve to better reflect modern families.
Fertility law in Canada is changing quickly, and it was a privilege to be part of the conversation.

Everyone who has littles in their life know who Ms. Rachel is (I am a grandma of the most adorable 2.5 yr old). She is my new hero. Right there along with Dolly.

I I was in beautiful Ottawa to carry out a stakeholder meeting with the Law Society of Nunavut on family violence. So much good work was done and connections forged to move this initiative forward. Thank you to the Federation of Law Societies of Canada for so kindly hosting us!! ❄️

I also made sure to enjoy the city, including Byward Market, Winterlude, the Museum of History, and great food. ❄️

I’m honoured to share that I’ve been featured in the University of Victoria Alumni Magazine in a story titled Road Lawyer.

The article explores my unconventional path into the legal profession — from growing up on an apple orchard in the Okanagan, to riding freight trains across North America after high school, to becoming a single parent balancing work and school while studying at UVic Law.

As a lawyer, I’ve had the privilege of:

* Helping lead the reforms that created the BC Family Law Act

* Contributing to changes later reflected in the federal Divorce Act

* Building a practice in family law, fertility law, mediation, and legal reform in BC and Nunavut

*
Working remotely (sometimes from my rolling office — a beloved van named Vanna White)

For me, this work is about more than legal systems — it’s about supporting modern families in all their diversity with dignity, clarity, and compassion.

Thank you UVic for sharing the story — and thank you to the colleagues, mentors, clients, and communities who continue to shape this journey.
