When a person dies, the legal consequences extend far beyond distributing assets. In particular, close attention must be made to the intersection between Estates Law and Family Law with respect to spousal rights since the concept of spouse remains an ever expanding one with more persons today cohabitating in marriage like relationships outside the traditional model and whether a person is married, separated, or in a common-law relationship can significantly affect what they would be entitled to receive from their deceased spouse’s estate. The distinction between “married spouses” and “common-law spouses” matters because they do not have the same rights under Ontario estates legislation.

🇨🇦 Breaking Free from Trade Dependence: How trade policies are reshaping the Canadian Real Estate Market which faces new challenges from Tariff War

This is a wake-up call for Canada and a moment in which she could and should pave her own way on the global stage rather than continuing to follow suit of its’ neighbour to the south which clearly has a madman at the helm. We know that recovery from the Covid pandemic was long and hard, but only two weeks into the USA’s presidency, it is regrettably clear that it will take much longer to recover from a Trump presidency.

Although Trump and his surrogates are cloaking this as a war on drugs and not a trade war, we examine below how the anticipated Tariffs will impact the Canadian real estate market as we prepare to diverge and part ways from our historic trade relations.

The article published by Statistics Canada discusses the importance of national symbols in Canada and their significance in shaping the country's identity and fostering emotional attachment among its citizens. The two most highly regarded national symbols among Canadians are the Charter of Rights and Freedoms and the national flag. Over 90% of Canadians consider these symbols to be either very or somewhat important to their national identity.

The national anthem and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) also rank high in importance, with 88% and 87% of respondents valuing them, respectively.

However, the article notes that hockey, despite being Canada's official winter sport, is considered a slightly less important national symbol, with 77% of Canadians believing it holds significance.

When asked to identify other symbols of national importance, respondents mentioned the beaver as the national animal (16%), the maple leaf (14%), and the values and qualities of Canadian people (11%).

In summary, national symbols, particularly the Charter of Rights and Freedoms and the national flag, play a crucial role in defining Canada's identity and promoting a sense of belonging and pride among its citizens.

A recent article from The Canadian Press details how the Helping Homebuyers and Protecting Tenants Act would enable municipalities in Ontario to swiftly and efficiently expand their settlement boundaries. This new legislation concerning building and density regulations is aimed at achieving Ontario's target of constructing 1.5 million homes by 2031. The Progressive Conservative government has introduced this latest housing bill as part of a series of initiatives to promote housing growth. According to Steve Clark, the additional steps and measures are necessary to achieve the housing goals, especially given the current economic uncertainty, inflation, and rising interest rates.
