By next spring, the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO) could introduce a three-month program to recognize foreign medical credentials in Ontario. This year, the self-governing body for Ontario’s medical professionals submitted a proposal to the province's Ministry of Health, a 12-week program designed specifically for internationally trained physicians in Ontario. Canada cannot provide residencies for foreign-trained healthcare professionals

Returning Canadian and international medical graduates have difficulties practicing medicine in Canada due to the scarcity of residency spots. Unfortunately, those who studied abroad face even more adversity in obtaining a residency than their counterparts who studied in Canada. This makes it almost impossible for them to pursue careers in Canada. Despite increased demand, the number of available spots for healthcare professionals in Canada has been gradually declining since the late 1980s. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has attempted to open up immigration programs for physicians and nurses alike. However, these efforts have not sufficiently remedied this growing shortage.

Quebec could welcome over 100,000 immigrants per year

Dismissing the claims made by Quebec Premier Francois Legault, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau insists that Quebec can easily welcome up to 112,000 immigrants per year. According to Trudeau, most of these immigrants could be French-speaking without difficulty. In stark contrast to Legault's claims that it would be catastrophic for Quebec’s economy to receive above 50,000 immigrants this year, the public is showing clear support for higher immigration levels. In addition, Trudeau highlighted Quebec's labour shortage and linked it to the underrepresentation of immigrants in the province, noting that businesses face immense difficulty filling job openings.
