Wishing everyone a great Labour Day long weekend! โ˜€๏ธ

Did you know Labour Day in Canada traces back to the Nine Hour Movement of 1872, when workers pushed for shorter workdays at a time when 10-hour days or longer were common? The movement helped build momentum for the Trade Unions Act, which legalized unions in Canada.

A lot has changed since then, but the day still has deep roots in the history of workplace rights.

โš ๏ธ Workplace issue on one side. Police involvement on the other.

That overlap can change how carefully you need to respond.

Simon dives into why statements made during an internal workplace process can have consequences beyond the workplace, especially when the same conduct is being looked at elsewhere too.

The safest move is to understand which process you are dealing with, what you are being asked to provide, and when legal advice should come in.

Summer schedules are winding down, and fall often brings a return to fuller teams, busier calendars, and new workplace expectations.

๐Ÿ‘ฅ Employers: This is a good time to confirm schedules, revisit workload, and make sure any changes to hours, duties, or remote work arrangements are communicated clearly.

๐Ÿ’ผ Employees: Review what is changing as the season shifts. If your schedule, responsibilities, or work arrangement is being adjusted, ask questions early and get clarity in writing.

A smooth fall transition starts with clear communication on both sides.

Get ahead of changing workplace expectations with practical legal guidance:

For a small business owner, a solid independent contractor agreement can prevent a lot of uncertainty later.

You want to know exactly what is being delivered, when payment is due, who owns the work, and what happens if the relationship changes or ends. Without that clarity, even a good working relationship can become stressful fast.

That is what stood out in Andreaโ€™s experience with Ryan. She got a contract that fit her business, clear answers throughout the process, and support that felt efficient and approachable.

Kent Employment Law can help you put the right agreement in place from the start:

AI may already be part of your workday, even if your workplace has never formally discussed it.

Drafting emails, summarizing documents, taking notes, and generating content can save time, but they can also raise questions about confidentiality, accuracy, approved use, and who is responsible when something goes wrong. Many of the risks start with one simple problem: employees and employers may be working from completely different assumptions.

So where should workplaces draw the line?

Getting fired is stressful enough. Then comes the job search, and yes, that can affect your claim too.

๐Ÿ“„ Keep track of applications, interviews, and offers, and be careful about turning down work without understanding the potential impact. Milena gets into why those details can matter more than people expect.

Getting fired can leave you with a lot of questions all at once.

Is the severance fair? What happens to your benefits? Do you have to sign by the deadline they gave you? And are you giving up anything by accepting the package?

The answer depends on more than how long you worked there. Your role, pay, contract, benefits, bonuses, and the circumstances of the termination can all matter.

Before you sign, make sure you understand what you are being offered and what you may be entitled to.
