Farris lawyers and students were pleased to attend the SABABC Gala at the JW Marriott Parq Vancouver. Hosted by the South Asian Bar Association of British Columbia, the annual Gala recognized the progress, excellence and accomplishments of the South Asian legal community through an evening of speeches, awards and meaningful connections. This year’s event also marked the introduction of the inaugural SABABC Gala Awards. Farris was proud to celebrate South Asian achievement and support the continued advancement of a connected and inclusive legal community. In attendance were Sunny Aujla, Nav Shukla, Mohnaam K. Shergill, Jivan Shokar and Rishaab Gunvante.

Farris Partner Rebecca Morse recently co-chaired the Continuing Legal Education Society of British Columbia’s Bankruptcy & Insolvency Update, alongside Geoffrey Dabbs. The program brought together leading practitioners to provide a practical update on current issues in bankruptcy and insolvency law, including the impact of bankruptcy on clients’ rights, applicable federal and provincial statutes, litigation risks, and directors’ and officers’ liability in insolvency.

Rebecca is a Partner in Farris’ Litigation group. She has a broad range of experience in civil litigation matters, including contractual disputes, construction disputes, insolvency and restructuring matters, estate and trust disputes, and international trade matters.

Farris Partner Todd Bell recently presented to members of the Law Society of the Northwest Territories on the Supreme Court of Canada’s landmark decision in Ahluwalia v. Ahluwalia, which recognized a new private law tort of intimate partner violence.

Together with Caitlin Ohama-Darcus of Lawson Lundell LLP, Todd discussed where the decision fits within the broader landscape of family violence jurisprudence in British Columbia and its interplay with the Family Law Act. The presentation also addressed practical considerations for counsel, including the appropriateness and proportionality of advancing a claim, limitation issues, pleading requirements and the assessment of damages.

Todd is an experienced family law litigator and trial lawyer. He practices parenting and custody litigation, assists parties seeking emergency protection from family violence and divides high net-worth assets such as corporate interests, trusts, foreign property, and pensions.
