Congratulations to John Trueman and Katelyn Chaudhary for winning a property assessment appeal involving Galiano Island forest land!

AMLC lawyer John Trueman and articled student Katelyn Chaudhary successfully represented a managed forest land owner on Galiano Island in an appeal against a decision of the BC Property Assessment Appeal Board.

For many years, AMLC lawyers have defended the rights of private managed forest owners on Galiano Island to live on their properties, just as many farmers live on their farms. This decision reinforces the principle that managed forest land owners should not lose that classification when they have a dwelling they use to help manage the forest.

In case you missed it, in February, Wes McMillan, along with AMLC’s Natalie Chan and Mia Stewart, as well as Nerissa Yan of Yan Muirhead LLP, obtained judgment for over 30 putative pre-sale purchasers. The team persuaded the court that the developer was dishonest in its performance of the pre-sale contracts and was not entitled to terminate them. As a result, the plaintiffs were awarded over $13 million in damages.

Congratulations to the team for winning this 19 day trial!

Wes McMillan and Nojan Kamoosi successfully represented the potential purchaser of a development site in North Vancouver. In doing so, they highlighted the importance for parties of commercial contracts to carefully consider whether all of the persons to give effect to the contract are also parties to it.

Congrats Wes and Nojan! Read more about the case at www.amlc.ca/latest/2024/2/26/wes-mcwes-millan-and-nojan-kamoosi-win-commercial-real-estate-trial.

AMLC is proud to be a Gold Level Sponsor of the 47th Annual Women in Law Dinner held by the Allard Law Women's Caucus.

This dinner brings together Allard Law students, faculty, and the broader legal community for a night of community-building and celebration. It also stands to recognize the legal community’s advancements towards gender equality while drawing attention to the progress that remains to be made.

AMLC's Alina Chekh and Natalie Chan participated as volunteer judges at the Allard School of Law First Year Moot on February 14th. As part of the Advocacy Course, all Allard Law first-year students, working in teams of two, argued a moot problem before a panel of volunteer judges.

This exercise provides an opportunity for students to learn the basic principles of written and oral advocacy and to develop their skills as advocates.

Supporting law students is important to AMLC and our lawyers are grateful for opportunities to contribute to the Vancouver legal community!

Emma Coffin successfully defended a claim for wrongful dismissal and bad faith termination for her client. Her client, the defendant, is a person with severe disabilities, and dismissed the claimant as a personal caregiver due to multiple breaches of their contract.

Emma argued that her client had just cause to terminate the claimant’s employment, and the judge agreed that the claimant’s failure to fulfill their basic duty repudiated their contract of employment.

Emma and AMLC’s lawyers contribute hundreds of hours to pro bono work, striving to help promote access to justice.
