Summer student, Vivian Li, joins Allen McMillan — Allen / McMillan Litigation Counsel

AMLC is pleased to welcome its new summer student, Vivian Li, to the team. Vivian is a second-year law student at UBC where she volunteers as a peer tutor and mentor to first-year law students. Vivian started with us earlier in May and will complete her summer articles with the firm mid-August.

We are excited to have Vivian join our team!

Congratulations to AMLC’s Chloe Trudel who was called to the bar on May 16, 2023!

Chloe obtained her law degree from The University of British Columbia, during which she volunteered and worked for the Indigenous Community Legal Clinic and participated in the Kawaskimhon Moot. Chloe joined AMLC as an associate earlier this month!

AMLC is proud to have supported Mission Possible at the Cleanest Day of the Year this past weekend! We joined Mission Possible’s Clean Team Associates on their micro-cleaning routes and picked up 50 bags of garbage in the Downtown Eastside along with the other attendees.

Mission Possible provides skills training, coaching sessions, and six months of meaningful work opportunities to those who face barriers while entering the workforce.

This June, we are celebrating five years of AMLC! 🥂🎉 Starting with just a team of six people in 2018, we have now grown to a team of 25 incredible individuals. We've been honoured to represent clients at various levels of court, and to have been a part of precedent-setting trials and appellate decisions. Congratulations to our new Associate, Natalie Chan, for being accepted into the Federation of Asian Canadian Lawyers BC Leadership Academy!

The FACL BC Leadership Academy was created to develop the next generation of leaders in the Asian-Canadian legal community and address the lack of diversity at organizational leadership levels. After undergoing a highly competitive selection process, Natalie has been accepted to this first of its kind, six-month program.

John Trueman wins privacy victory at BC Court of Appeal — Allen / McMillan Litigation Counsel

Congratulations to John Trueman for helping win a privacy victory at the BC Court of Appeal!

Along with Paul LeBlanc and Susan E. Ross, AMLC associate John Trueman represented T.L., a mother of three whose medical records were taken by social workers without her knowledge or consent.

In a unanimous decision, the BC Court of Appeal struck down a section of BC’s child protection law that gives social workers unfettered access to personal health information held by public bodies.

Allen / McMillan is pleased to announce that, effective January 1, 2023, Kaitlyn Meyer has been appointed Counsel.

Kaitlyn joined the firm in 2019, just one year after its inception, and quickly became an irreplaceable member of the team. Appointment as Counsel reflects Kaitlyn’s senior status at the firm and her dual role as a senior lawyer providing advice and advocacy services to the firm’s clients as well as mentorship and guidance to the firm’s younger lawyers. In her new role, Kaitlyn will also be taking on a greater leadership role within the firm.

Greg Allen, Kaitlyn Meyer and Victoria Baylis win 7-day trial — Allen / McMillan Litigation Counsel

Congratulations to Greg Allen, Kaitlyn Meyer and Victoria Baylis for winning a 7-day trial!

Greg, Kaitlyn and Victoria acted for the defendants who had entered a series of financial transactions with the plaintiffs over the course of several years, primarily to fund the plaintiffs’ real estate development projects. The plaintiffs filed two actions alleging, among other claims, that they had overpaid the defendants.

AMLC's team is growing fast, and we are pleased to announce that Emma Coffin has joined our firm as an associate!

Emma graduated from Peter A. Allard School of Law and was called to the bar in 2021. Before joining AMLC, she articled and practiced as a commercial litigation associate at a top regional firm. Prior to attending law school, Emma worked for several years in corporate communications and business development in the mining industry, including acting as the Vice President of Corporate Development for a marketing firm.

AMLC is pleased to announce that John Trueman has joined our firm as an associate!

Prior to attending law school, John worked for over a decade on the Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement, including the last nine years as Senior Policy and Strategic Advisor to the Chief Adjudicator. After graduating law school, John clerked for the Honourable Justice Sheilah L. Martin at the Supreme Court of Canada. He then worked in private practice before joining AMLC.

He has worked with individuals, small businesses, and non-profit organizations to find practical and cost-effective solutions to litigation and employment law problems. He also has experience in administrative, constitutional, Aboriginal and information/privacy law and has appeared in the British Columbia and Ontario Courts of Appeal.

We are excited to have John join our team!

We are looking for candidates who take pride in their work but do not take themselves too seriously. The ability to self-generate files is an asset but certainly not a requirement.

Liam Babbitt successfully defends action to force the sale of a jointly owned property — Allen / McMillan Litigation Counsel

Typically, when two parties equally own a property, either one can apply to the court to have it sold under the Partition of Property Act (PPA). However, in the case that was brought forth to AMLC's Liam Babbitt, after living in a property for about a year, the co-owners decided to rent it out. What happens when the co-owner does not have immediate possession of the property, but wants to force the sale of a jointly owned property?

Wes McMillan and Kaitlyn Meyer win shareholders’ and directors’ dispute — Allen / McMillan Litigation Counsel

In case you missed it: Wes McMillan and Kaitlyn Meyer won a shareholders’ and directors’ dispute back in May 2021!

In a 9-day hearing, Wes and Kaitlyn acted for a businessman, who along with a disbarred lawyer, established and grew a marina in Richmond, BC. The parties’ relationship deteriorated until eventually, they agreed it should end. They each filed an oppression claim under the Business Corporations Act. Before the matter was heard, the opposing party passed away.
