In September, we had the pleasure of featuring one of our community partners, the West Coast Kids Cancer Foundation (WCK), and all the incredible work they are doing. You can find the full update on our website: https://bit.ly/3ENL2Hj.

One of WCK’s innovative initiatives is the Port Shirt Program, which was conceived by Cameron, a young boy receiving care at BC Children’s Hospital, who had an idea to adapt a regular t-shirt to make treatment a more comfortable and easier experience for kids. Many children diagnosed with cancer receive chemo and medication through a port inserted under their skin, allowing them to receive the treatment they need without being pricked by a needle constantly. While a port helps solve one problem in a child’s cancer journey, it creates another. Due to the location of the port, children must remove their shirts every time they receive treatment, making a challenging time scarier and more uncomfortable.

Cameron’s idea was simple – create a way for children to receive medicine without removing their shirts. Cameron didn’t want to help only himself but all the children in treatment, so the Port Shirt program was born.

The Port Shirts are specially adapted with a zipper, giving medical professionals access to a child’s port without removing their shirts. Each zipper is hand-sewn by a WCK volunteer into a soft, high-quality shirt provided by Whistle & Flute. The shirts are delivered to families across the province at no cost to them.

Cameron sadly passed away in 2020, but his legacy and game-changing idea continue, helping children just like him. So far in 2023, WCK has provided 140 port shirts to families across the province at no cost to them.

MT+Co. proudly helped WCK kick off the Port Shirt program in 2021.

The Canadian Infrastructure Bank (CIB) has introduced the Indigenous Equity Initiative (IEI), a lending program designed to enable First Nations to become equity owners of infrastructure assets situated on their traditional territories.

This initiative will provide the upfront capital required to purchase equity stakes in major infrastructure projects. IEI is a part of CIB’s broader pledge to invest a minimum of one billion dollars in Indigenous infrastructure.

IEI is an important step towards economic reconciliation, fostering community involvement, and ensuring a future where First Nations communities are active stakeholders and beneficiaries of the infrastructure shaping their territories.

If you would like to discuss infrastructure projects, funding, or equity ownership, reach out to your MT+Co. legal team, or get in touch with our First Nations Major Projects Team by contacting Stephen Pederson.

MT+Co Invests in Accessible Legal Services

Introducing NW Notaries + Lawyers: Accessible and Affordable Legal Solutions for Real People.

MT+Co. is excited to announce our recent acquisition of NW Notaries + Lawyers (NWNL), a reputable New Westminster firm whose vision is to provide accessible and affordable legal solutions directly to real people.

This vision arose from our experience in launching MT Access – our 2020 initiative supporting entrepreneurs and small businesses through COVID with free resources and affordable fixed-price solutions. The NWNL initiative is the next step for us in our efforts to help bridge the access to justice gap – this time with personal legal services designed for individuals and families.

NW Notaries + Lawyers, formerly New West Notary Public, was founded by Martin Kastelein. He and his experienced team have served New Westminster and the lower mainland for over 34 years in real estate transfers, preparing wills, power of attorney, representation agreements, advanced directives, and other notarial services.

While Martin has retired from his role as a notary, he continues to act as an involved guide and mentor to our diverse and dynamic team.

The team is now led by managing notary and lawyer Angie Brar. Under her guidance, NWNL offers accessible and affordable services in real estate, estate planning, notarizations, and a range of corporate services.

While this practice operates independently from MT+Co., we are excited to support the NWNL vision and take steps together to help promote access to legal services.

Stay tuned for some exciting announcements about what this collaboration will bring for both NWNL and MT+Co – and, more importantly, for the delivery of personal legal services in British Columbia.

Check out NW Notaries + Lawyers website here: https://nwnotariesandlawyers.com/

MT+Co. Community Partner Feature: Helicopters Without Borders

Helicopters Without Borders (HWB) is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to supporting remote communities and populations affected by natural disasters, inefficient supply chains, geographical challenges, and poor transportation infrastructure by offering innovative air transportation solutions.

At the core of HWB's mission is the endeavor to bridge healthcare providers with underserved communities with limited or no access to healthcare professionals and treatments. This is achieved by directly transporting healthcare professionals to these communities or transporting community members to urban areas for medical care.

In a groundbreaking move, HWB acquired its first helicopter and converted it into a mobile dental clinic, pioneering a new era in remote dental care.

MT+Co. has proudly supported HWB as a community partner since 2021, and we are honored to be part of their incredible mission. Nick Smith provides pro bono legal advice to support HWB’s ongoing operations, and Yvonne Choi volunteers her time to provide brand consulting services.

For more information about the remarkable work carried out by HWB, please visit their website: https://helicopterswithoutborders.org/
