Canada is undergoing a major social, political, and economic transformation. As the country adapts to this evolving landscape, our lawyers continue to align themselves with the needs of Indigenous organizations and businesses affected by these changes.
According to the Natural Resources Canada report, as of May 2023, 493 major projects are either under construction or planned to commence within the next 10 years, with a potential capital value of $572 billion. The energy, mining, and forestry sectors are three key industries projected to experience significant growth in the coming years. Indigenous communities, corporations, and financial institutions are collaborating to create a more sustainable and prosperous future for all parties involved.
In the months to come, we will sit down with MT+Co. lawyers to discuss their perspective on the changing economy, what it means to their practice, and most of all, what it means to our current and future clients.
Lean in and join us in the conversation. Where is your place in this changing economy?
Whether in an M+A or regulatory context or in a lending and borrowing transaction, let’s do good things across Canada together.

Congratulations to MT + Co.’s client, Haisla Nation, on their significant milestone achievement of taking the final investment decision needed on the Cedar LNG Project. The project is the largest Indigenous-owned infrastructure project in Canada and will be one of the most energy-efficient LNG facilities in the world.
The project is majority-owned by Haisla Nation and has an expected cost of CAD$5.5 billion, which will be funded through debt financing and equity contributions from Haisla Nation and their partner Pembina Pipeline Corporation. MT+Co. has worked with the Haisla Nation for several years on the project, and for this milestone assisted with both the project debt financing, and in securing funds for their equity contribution from the First Nations Finance Authority.
Haisla Nation Chief Councilor Crystal Smith said, "Cedar LNG will make the most significant mark on economic reconciliation ever in our country. With Cedar LNG, we have proven that Indigenous communities can successfully forge a path to economic independence and generational prosperity."
In a video statement published on Cedar LNG's website, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said, “With Cedar LNG, Haisla Nation has been a leader in demonstrating how Indigenous peoples and governments can and should work together in partnership to create prosperity and opportunities for the next generation.”
The project has garnered strong support from neighbouring Indigenous communities and promises to share this success with these local communities by contributing to economic success for all. It is expected to create up to 500 jobs during construction and 100 full-time positions once operational.
The Project is planning to begin operation in late 2028.
