More often than not, we see civil court cases and human rights tribunal decisions that highlight poorly conducted workplace investigations and essentially offer a checklist of what employers should not do. However, in the recent case of Salanguit v. Parq Vancouver and another, 2024 BCHRT 119 (“Parq”), the BC Human Rights Tribunal (“Tribunal”) has provided employers with welcome guidance on how to handle a discrimination complaint and what an effective and reasonable workplace investigation looks like.

To learn how this case served as an excellent learning opportunity for employers on how to effectively navigate workplace complaints and investigations, read our full blog on our website.

The conference, hosted on the traditional Territories of the Kwanlin Dün First Nation and the Ta'an Kwäch'än Council, invited delegates from diverse backgrounds to engage in discussions on several topics and ventures that align with the principles and aspirations of Indigenous communities in the North.

Participants had the opportunity to hear from influential keynote speakers and take part in panel discussions and interactive workshops.

Erin spoke on a panel with Indigenous and Northern female lawyers moderated by Deputy Premier MacLean and shared their experiences incorporating legal expertise and Indigenous legal orders into sustainable projects. This session highlighted the significant contributions of women in these fields, focusing on their roles in shaping environmental policies, increasing Indigenous jurisdiction in major projects, and promoting global sustainability goals.

05/06/2024

On Sunday, May 5, we observed the National Day of Remembrance for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit People, also called Red Dress Day. Beginning in 2010, Red Dress Day honours and brings awareness to the thousands of Indigenous women, girls, and two-spirit folks who have gone missing or murdered.

Research and lived experience tell us that Indigenous women, girls, and 2S people experience more violence than their non-Indigenous sisters. This is due to past and present colonial laws and policies.

MT+Co.’s Marion Buller worked as Chief Commissioner for the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls from 2016 to 2019. Of this work, she remarked, “The work of the National Inquiry was very difficult, on so many different levels. I am forever grateful to the families and survivors who shared their truths with the world. What is important to me is the legacy of our work. - that the past and present genocide is slowly being accepted as true - both domestically and internationally.”

There are many organizations doing work to raise awareness and bring change.

The Act, endeavors to address the documented gender-wage gap in B.C. by imposing certain restrictions and obligations on employers in the Province.

Given some uncertainty surrounding the Act, we set out to answer some questions raised by employers and employees during the Act’s first few months in force.
