The Institute for the Oceans and Fisheries (IOF) contributes internationally respected research and expertise to accelerate the global shift toward sustainable oceans. Housed at The University of British Columbia, Canada’s premier west coast university, and grown from the core of the Fisheries Centre, the IOF addresses issues of local and global concern through a growing network of global partners in government, academia, coastal communities, non-profit organizations, and the business sector. We welcome new students and faculty members across a wide range of disciplines, including zoology, economics, marine geochemistry, resource management, anthropology and sociology, marine and aquatic ecology, international law and public policy. We envision a world in which the oceans are healthy and their resources are used sustainably and equitably. Together, we are leading the way to healthy and sustainable marine and freshwater systems through excellent research, inspirational education and innovative societal engagement.

The GO Sars, Norway’s flagship fisheries research vessel, was bottom trawling more than 80nm offshore early last month when Elena Eriksen, the expedition’s leader, spotted a dark red dot on an echosound near the water’s surface. It was small, but dense.

Aboard Norway's GO Sars, scientists survey the Barents Sea to collect data that helps shape fish quotas and monitor marine ecosystems.

The notion of “counter-fishing” was developed by activist Claire Nouvian together with philosopher Baptiste Morizot and prominent marine scientist Daniel Pauly Sea Around Us, drawing inspiration from thinkers such as Ivan Illich and Leopold Kohr.

NGOs urge the EU to phase out fishing vessels over 33 metres by 2035, arguing they fuel global overfishing and harm ecosystems.
