Last Friday afternoon, our articling students took a well-deserved recess from their busy schedules to attend a Vancouver Canadians baseball game at Nat Bailey Stadium. The students enjoyed the classic ballpark experience with hot dogs and a homer. The game was a nail-biter with the Canadians coming up short in a 3-2 loss in extra innings.

Farris lawyers, students and guests attended the 42nd Annual Chinese Legal Community Banquet at Sun Sui Wah Seafood Restaurant on August 9. The banquet recognizes cultural diversity by providing an opportunity for lawyers and students to socialize over a traditional 10-course Chinese dinner. This year, the Honourable Judge Derek Mah of the Provincial Court of British Columbia and Mr. Daniel Lee presented as the panel speakers.

In a test of endurance and determination, Farris lawyers and students took on the famous Grouse Grind in an annual friendly competition. Barristers and Solicitors competed against each other, with the banter being as intense as the climb itself. The Barristers argued for a swift ascent, while the Solicitors meticulously negotiated each step. There was a debate over who had the right of way, but in the end, everyone agreed that the real victory was simply surviving the Grind once again.

Farris Partners, Nikki Charlton and Todd R. Bell, recently co-presented with Dr. Lisa Ferrari at the Family Law Program (Federation of Law Societies) in Halifax, NS. The National Family Law Program is Canada’s largest and most prestigious family law conference, attracting approximately 500 family law practitioners, members of the judiciary and representatives from government and academia from across Canada. Nikki and Todd’s session, ‘Screens, Gaming, Digital Media: Where Each Fit in the Best Interests Test’, addressed the emerging area of co-parenting conflicts related to children’s social media and screen use. Todd also represented British Columbia in the final plenary session, providing a comprehensive review of national case law developments.

Nikki Charlton is a Partner in Farris’ Family Law group. Her practice includes all matters affecting families in British Columbia such as separation, divorce, property division, common law trusts, spousal support, child support, guardianship, residency, and parenting time.

Todd R. Bell is a Partner in Farris’ Family Law group. His practice focuses on the division of high net-worth assets and all manner of parenting and custody litigation. He is a highly skilled litigator and trial lawyer with wide-ranging experience spanning all levels of court in B.C.

Farris Summer Articling Students took in the Vancouver Whitecaps’ game on Wednesday, July 17th, 2024 against Sporting Kansas City. After losing their initial lead, the Whitecaps were able to overcome the 1-1 tie by scoring a second goal fifteen minutes before the game ended. We must have brought them luck!

Farris was proud to sponsor the Junior Pan American Championship (JPAC), which ran from July 3-12 at Tamanawis Park in Surrey. This tournament, hosted on behalf of Field Hockey Canada, brought together 216 athletes, 240 dedicated staff and volunteers, and thousands of spectators from seven different countries. Argentina defeated Canada 10–0 in the men’s final and Argentina defeated USA 3-1 in the women’s final.

The JPAC tournament is more than just a sporting event; it is a showcase of the incredible talent, expertise, and passion within our community. By bringing international hockey to Canada and British Columbia, we are not only highlighting the skill and dedication of our local athletes, but also supporting the continued growth and investment in our community.

Over the course of his policy internship at the Office of Senator Rosemary Moodie, Farris Summer Articled Student Daniel Pope (né Edmeades) was charged with authoring the first draft of Senator Moodie’s report, From Vision to Reality: On a National Strategy for Children and Youth in Canada. Daniel was responsible for reviewing, summarizing, and synthesizing input from a wide variety of stakeholders during a set of roundtable discussions previously hosted by the Senator’s office. These stakeholders included large children’s advocacy groups, organizations advocating for Black and Indigenous children, and children and youth themselves. The final report and the recommendations it contained went on to inspire Senator Moodie’s Bill S-282, the National Strategy for Children and Youth Act. The Bill recently passed second reading in the Senate on June 4, 2024.

Farris Partner, Todd Bell, recently served as a guest instructor at the Continuing Legal Education Society of British Columbia’s three-day workshop on ‘Winning Advocacy Skills’. Todd, alongside a distinguished group of senior members of the bench and bar, spent the day in a courtroom environment with junior lawyers, focusing on honing their courtroom skills. The comprehensive program included practicing essential elements of trial advocacy such as direct and cross-examinations, as well as opening and closing statements; and the rare opportunity for rising litigators to receive unfiltered feedback from those at the top of their craft on both sides of the bench.

Todd is a highly skilled litigator and trial lawyer with wide-ranging courtroom experience spanning all levels of Court in British Columbia. Farris recently represented Vancity credit union on a co-funded land loan for the acquisition by Hydrogen Technology & Energy Corporation (“HTEC”) of a hydrogen manufacturing and processing facility. Based in Vancouver, HTEC designs, builds, and operates hydrogen fuel supply solutions to support the deployment of hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles.
