A growing number of temporary residents are reportedly submitting work permit and visitor extension applications they know have little or no chance of approval, simply to remain in Canada while waiting for permanent residence opportunities.

The trend comes as nearly 2 million temporary permits are set to expire by the end of 2026 and competition for permanent residence continues to intensify.🇨🇦

Government data shows work permit extension applications have surged from about 443,000 in 2020 to more than 1 million in 2025. Refusal rates have also climbed, with experts suggesting the increase is partly linked to the growing number of weak or unsupported applications entering the system.đź”»

Supporters argue many temporary residents are simply trying to avoid abandoning the lives they have built in Canada while waiting for immigration decisions.
Critics say the practice is adding pressure to an already backlogged system and undermining the integrity of Canada’s immigration process.❌

The fastest way for a qualified applicant to get refused? A reference letter that describes the wrong job. 📉

A client sent me hers — admin assistant, a role she’d genuinely done for years. But the duties listed on the letter were greeting visitors, answering phones, sorting mail. That’s not an admin assistant. That’s a receptionist.

Here’s the part people miss: IRCC doesn’t classify you by your job title. They classify you by the duties written in the letter. 🎯
✅ Admin assistant = skilled role that counts toward PR
❌ Receptionist = one tier lower, doesn’t count
Same job. Same person. The wrong words on the page would have quietly dropped her a tier and cost her the whole application.

The fix was simple once we caught it — add the duties she actually performed (scheduling, maintaining filing systems, preparing expense reports) so the letter matched the skilled role. But if she’d submitted it as written, she might never have known why she was refused.

Don’t just check that your letter is signed and on letterhead. Check that every single duty matches the NOC code you’re claiming.

BC just made 12 occupations ineligible for its provincial nominee program — and if you’re building toward PR through one of them, you need to check today. ⏳
It’s buried in a 62-page program guide BC updated at the end of May. The rule is blunt: if your job offer is classified under one of these 12 NOC codes, your Skills Immigration application will be refused — no matter how strong your employer, language score, or work history is.
The occupations now ineligible:
📍 Executive assistants (12100)
📍 HR & recruitment officers (12101)
📍 Accounting technicians & bookkeepers (12200)
📍 Administrative officers (13100)
📍 Administrative assistants (13110)
📍 Legal admin assistants (13111)

The detail that matters most: this applies to applications submitted after June 13, 2026. Before that date, the old rules still hold. After it, these roles are out — and you’re looking at a different occupation or a different province.

Planning to get your Canadian PR through French in 2026? 🇫🇷 Before you build your whole year around it, be honest with yourself about one thing. ⏳

I hear this plan constantly: learn French, boost your Express Entry score, get an ITA within a year. 🎯 On paper, it makes complete sense. In practice, it’s where a lot of people quietly lose a year.

Here’s the honest question most people skip: how realistic is NCLC 7 in 12 months?

That’s not conversational French. 🗣️ That’s a solid, functional level — tested and scored across reading, writing, speaking, and listening. For most people starting from scratch, it’s significantly further away than it feels at the beginning.

I’m not telling you to abandon the idea. 🚫 If you want to learn French, do it — it’s a genuine asset. The mistake isn’t studying French. It’s making French your entire strategy with nothing behind it if the score doesn’t land in time.

So flip it:
✅ French = Plan B. Keep going if you’re motivated.

You’ve hit the savings number for your study permit, so you assume you’re safe. 💰 Meeting the amount is only half of what an officer is actually checking. 📉

Here’s what trips people up: study permit applicants think a large balance — or lots of money moving through the account — is a good thing. On its own, it isn’t. Officers are looking for two things beyond the number: stability, and since 2025, where the money came from. 🎯

They want your funds to tell a story that adds up. Most accounts don’t:

📍 $80,000 in savings on a $300 monthly salary? That’s not reassurance — it’s a red flag. 🚩
⏳ A large deposit two weeks before you apply? Same.
📉 Money that swings wildly in and out? Reads as unstable, not available.

And the money can be completely legitimate and still read as suspicious — because the statement doesn’t explain itself. ⚠️

The hardest part: you usually can’t tell if your own statements have this problem. 👀 They look fine to you. They looked fine to every refused applicant too — because it’s their own money, so of course it makes sense to them. The gap is between what you know about your finances and what the document proves on its face.

So before you submit: don’t just check that you’ve got enough. ✅ Check that your statements show stable funds with a clear, documented source.

The most expensive immigration mistake I’ve seen this year didn’t come from a scammer. It came from a friend. 📉

A client came to me after her friend — who’d gotten PR the year before — offered to help with her application. The reference letter was done wrong. IRCC issued a procedural fairness letter: one chance to respond and fix it. She went back to the same friend to write that response.

It was wrong again.

The result: the Canadian work experience she’d spent years building, she can no longer claim. Years of CRS points, gone. Not because she wasn’t qualified — she was. Purely because of how it was presented. Twice. ⏳

This is the quiet danger of friend advice, Reddit threads, Facebook groups, WhatsApp chats. Getting PR for yourself doesn’t make someone an immigration expert. It makes them an expert in exactly one application — their own. A different NOC, a different pathway, a single wrong word in a reference letter, and the same “help” that worked for them sinks you.

And the friend? She feels terrible — but she lost nothing. That’s the part people miss: free advice is only free for the person giving it. The person taking it carries all the risk.
