I came to Canada (Ontario) on August 8, 1981 as a Nanny with the intentions of staying a year at most. During my first Ontario winter, I was gifted a 4 night โLearn to Skiโ gift certificate for night skiing. I met a sole practitioner solicitor in real estate on the chairlift, and he offered me a job as his conveyancer โ I taught myself and he never knew.

Becoming managing partner was a high-water mark for me. Knowing I had the support of my partners to shape the future of the firm and being the first female managing partner was also very inspiring. One of the first mandates was a brand โrefreshโ with the goal of showing the business community that we are leaders in the market. We have been able to grow our associate and partner base and attract amazing talent and I am confident that the trend will continue. I am told that many are attracted to KKBL because of our culture and Iโm proud to be part of shaping that for the firm.

The ability to wear many hats and problem solve. Balancing a career and busy family is not easy but the ability to problem solve is key. Focusing on how to get to a solution by listening and trying to accommodate various viewpoints is critical and ensuring that everyoneโs voice is heard, within reason. Iโm a people person at heart so being part of such an amazing team at KKBL is very fulfilling as well as seeing our team members grow personally and professionally.

By giving back, taking the time to help people learn. We all need guidance from time to time so taking a step back and offering a hand goes a long way and I remind myself often that I too started out โgreenโ and was able to get that guidance. On July 4th, Daniel Newfield, Adam Lazar, Nathan Phelan, and Erin Kotz will be be representing Koffman Kalef as they tackle the Grouse Grind, a 2.5km ascent with an elevation gain of 800 meters and 2,830 steps.
Theyโre climbing to support CMHA BC's 5th Annual "Real Estate Grind for Mental Health 2024" to raise funds and awareness for mental health. This very important cause seeks to eliminate the stigma associated with mental health and to provide much-needed mental health support programs throughout B.C.

The conversation was centered around the ways in which Indigenous and non-Indigenous business communities can collaborate to foster reconciliation and establish mutually beneficial relationships.

It is our pleasure to support one of our colleagues, Ryan, this month as he has committed to walking 100,000 steps in a single day on June 29th to raise funds for . Ryan is one of our incredible support staff members, working as a Legal Administrative Assistant working in our Commercial Real Estate & Development team.
Rainbow Railroad is a non-profit organization that helps relocate at risk LGBTQI+ people around the world facing persecution based on their s*xual orientation, gender identity and s*x characteristics.
When explaining his motivation for doing this fundraiser, Ryan writes:
"I do a lot of walking in this city. As I was thinking about the idea of this walk, Rainbow Railroad came to mind, and it struck me how grateful I am as a q***r man to live in a place where, for the most part, I can live my life being my authentic self without shame. I can go outside on these long walks and take in these beautiful sights without fear of violence or persecution. Unfortunately, in 2024, that isnโt the case for so many people across the world, and itโs made it evident that I can do more."
