Hiring your first contractor feels like a huge step forward in your practice.

And it is.

But before you sign anything, there's something you need to know.

The CRA doesn't care what you call someone.

They care how the relationship actually works.

And if it looks like employment, they will treat it as employment.

I see this mistake happen all the time with health practitioners who are scaling up.

It's never intentional.

But it is costly.

The good news?

There are different ways to structure a hiring relationship, and the right one depends on what you actually need for your practice.

That's exactly what we figure out together.

I offer free 15-minute consults for health practitioners across British Columbia.

Let's find the structure that works for you.

I said what I said 🫣

Saving a few dollars now can cost you a LOT more later.

If you're looking to incorporate your business, it's important to get expert advice first and do it properly from the start.

I share this not to shame anyone but to highlight that just because you CAN do it yourself, doesn't mean you should.

If you're not sure if your company was set up properly or curious about whether it's time to incorporate, book a call with me, link in bio.

Starting a freelancer business in British Columbia?

Here’s the advice I give my clients before problems show up.

1️⃣ Business name + trademark checks
Before you get attached to a name, make sure it’s available and not already being used in a similar industry. Rebranding after a cease-and-desist is far more expensive than doing this properly upfront.

2️⃣ A proper Client Services Agreement
Your contract should reflect your services, pricing structure, and risk. This is the agreement your income depends on. It’s not the place for shortcuts.

3️⃣ Website legal compliance
If you have a website with a contact form, newsletter signup, checkout page, or blog, you need a Privacy Policy — and strong Website Terms are best practice. If you market to the U.S., those documents need to account for that too.

Getting this right early gives you clarity, confidence, and fewer legal fires to put out later.

There's obviously way more to think about when starting your business but this is a good start!

‼️ Don’t get this wrong ‼️

If you’re incorporated, you shouldn't sign contracts the same way you did as a sole proprietor.

Once you incorporate, you and your company are two separate legal entities.

Your company should be the one entering into the contract—not you personally—and you should be signing on behalf of the company as an authorized signatory.

This isn’t a small detail.

It affects liability, enforceability, and who’s actually on the hook if there’s ever a dispute.

One thing to double-check:

If you’re incorporated, it’s worth reviewing how your contracts are being sent and signed.

Questions? Drop them in the comments - others are likely wondering too 👇🏽

Thinking about incorporating as a realtor in British Columbia?

A Personal Real Estate Corporation (PREC) isn’t mandatory, but for some BC realtors it can offer more flexibility around tax planning, cash flow, and how commission income is paid.

Because real estate is a regulated profession, PRECs come with specific rules around ownership, licensing, naming, and what the corporation can (and can’t) do.

The real question isn’t just can you incorporate—it’s whether incorporating makes sense for your business and how to do it properly.

If you’re earning consistently and starting to think more long-term about your real estate practice, a PREC may be worth exploring.

If we haven't met yet, nice to meet you 👋

I'm Jaime, founder of Jaime Bell Law.

I’ve been practicing law for nearly 15 years, with a focus on contracts and business law.

After almost a decade in traditional firms, I realized there was a real gap in the market: service providers, coaches, therapists and entrepreneurs who felt most lawyers didn’t get the online space.

That’s why I built Jaime Bell Law as a fully virtual firm to bring modern, accessible and client-centered legal support to business owners, like you.

My approach is practical, collaborative, and focused on creating solutions that actually work for your business.

So whether you’re starting something new or growing what you’ve built, I’m here to help you protect your business and move forward with confidence.

Incorporating your business is just the beginning.

If you want to keep your company legally compliant and your liability protection intact, there are a few key things you need to do every year...

and most small business owners don’t even know they’re missing them.

This post breaks down the essentials: annual filings, minute books, tax returns, and more.

Save this if you’re already incorporated (or thinking about it).

And if you’re not sure your company is fully up to date, let’s chat — I offer flat-fee support to help you stay compliant, so you never miss a deadline, or worse: find out your company has been dissolved for non-compliance.
