🚨 Heads up, BC business owners 🚨

Amendments are coming to the BC Business Corporations Act (BCA) as late as
early fall 2025 that affect private companies’ transparency register information.

Under the new law, companies must:
• Record additional information in their current registers about their significant individuals including; extra details like SIN numbers
•Post certain information from these registers in a new online and public database

New timelines include:
• File within 6 months of incorporation or restructuring
• Update within 15 days of ownership changes (down from 30)
• Annual filing due in a yet-to-be-announced window

Public access will include:
• Full name & birth year
• Canadian citizenship/permanent residency status, and
• All other citizenships, if not Canadian

We are looking for a permanent, full-time Legal Administrative Assistant to join our firm.

The position involves the following:
• Maintains all administrative functions, including file opening/closing procedures, maintain the calendar, books appointments and manages bring forwards.
• Computer knowledge including: MS Word, MS Excel, Outlook, Internet, and Time tracker software (ie Amicus and PC Law).
• Manages work volume and juggling priorities while supporting a demanding practice.
• Ensures deadlines are met and limitation dates are adhered to.
• Complete time entries and billings.
• Sort incoming mail and preparation of outgoing mail.
• Performs other related duties as required.

Real estate experience (purchase, sales, financing) would also be an asset but is not a requirement.

Can the use of a smart doorbell constitute a breach of privacy? 🔔

New technologies, such as smart doorbell cameras, have become increasingly popular for home security purposes. However, this has also led to a growth of privacy concerns. The installation and use of smart doorbells have led to disputes between neighbours arising from concerns over violation of privacy rights and the use of surveilling equipment.

Are these smart doorbells permitted for private use in public areas? Can the use of a smart doorbell constitute a breach of privacy? In two recent cases in Alberta and Manitoba, these questions were the focus of disputes regarding invasion of privacy and surveillance by a smart doorbell.
