Growing up in Newfoundland, we were told in school that the Beothuks were once on the island, but now were just “gone”. Our education about the Mi’kmaw people was non-existent, let alone our education of the horrors of residential schools and other systems of oppression against First Nations people. Through my own education later in life I’m so grateful I have a wide understanding of Canada’s history with our Indigenous peoples, but know there is still more to learn. Most of all, I support Truth and Reconciliation 🧡
