🚧 Traffic Alert – Downtown Port Arthur

Work is now underway at the intersection of Court Street and Red River Road as crews install new traffic signals and pedestrian crosswalks as part of the North Core Streetscape Project.

The intersection is expected to be closed for up to three days, so if you’re heading downtown, allow a little extra travel time and plan an alternate route.

Businesses throughout the North Core—including White Macgillivray Lester LLP—remain open during the construction.

Please slow down, watch for workers, and support our downtown businesses while these final improvements are completed. 🚦

A new school has moved into the North Core. 🐟

Just down the street from our office, Esox (Ginoozheg)—a new public art installation by artist Simon Lacey—is now swimming through Mall Street Plaza.

Esox is the scientific genus name for pikes.

Ginoozheg is the plural form of the Anishinaabemowin word for northern pike—a fitting name for an installation inspired by the Kaministiquia River.

It’s a creative and unmistakably Northwestern Ontario addition to the neighbourhood. We’re glad to see more character, conversation and public art coming to downtown Port Arthur.

Have you seen it in person yet?

Spotted at Memorial and Harbour Expressway.

The yellow device in this photo was travelling with regular city traffic—raising a broader question: how does Ontario law distinguish among the growing range of small electric vehicles and mobility devices?

Our latest article looks at the different rules that may apply to low-speed vehicles, mobility scooters, ATVs, side-by-sides and golf carts—including potential insurance consequences when one is involved in a collision.

Read the article in the first comment.

🚧 And so it begins.

Crews began breaking ground on Cumberland Street South this morning—directly in front of the WML office—as the next phase of the North Core reconstruction gets underway.

The road is now closed to vehicles, but our office remains fully open, and our front entrance at 1 Cumberland Street South is still accessible on foot.

If you’re visiting us, please allow a few extra minutes to park nearby and walk over. Limited parking may also be available behind our building off Red River Road. Call us at 807-344-1000 before your appointment and we’ll help you find the best way in.

We officially have front-row seats to the North Core transformation!

You’ve probably seen them around Thunder Bay this summer—the little enclosed electric “mini-cars.” Everyone seems to be asking the same question: are they actually legal?

In Thunder Bay, the answer is no. Not on the road, and not on the sidewalk.

But the longer answer matters more. Some of these vehicles are purchased by seniors or others looking for a way to remain independent—and operating an unregistered, uninsured vehicle can dramatically affect what happens after a collision.

One more thing worth knowing: an illegal vehicle does not automatically decide who is at fault. Trying to “teach someone a lesson” in traffic can leave the lesson-giver legally responsible for the collision they cause.

We’ve laid out the rules for mini-cars, mobility scooters, ATVs, side-by-sides and golf carts in plain language:

By Jeffrey J. Moorley | July 2026 | White Macgillivray Lester LLP If you’ve driven around Thunder Bay this summer, you’ve probably seen one: a small, brightly coloured, enclosed electric vehicle puttering along a city street, looking like something between a golf cart and a very small car. 🚧 Visiting our office? Read this first.

Starting Monday, July 13, Cumberland Street South will be closed to vehicles from Red River Road to Pearl Street as North Core construction continues.

Our office remains fully open. The sidewalk to our front door at 1 Cumberland St S is unaffected — you just can't drive or park on that segment of Cumberland itself, so plan a few extra minutes to park nearby and walk over. Limited parking may also be available behind our building off Red River Road — call us at 807-344-1000 before your appointment and we'll let you know.

And while you're downtown, keep an eye on Mall Street — the new string lights are set to shine for the first time next week, and we hear some new aquatic residents 🐟 will be surfacing soon. The North Core is coming along!

Your auto insurance may not cover what you think it covers.

As of July 1, most Ontario accident benefits are now optional.

That means the time to understand your coverage is before you’re injured in a collision — not after.

At White Macgillivray Lester LLP, we see how devastating it can be when people discover the limits of their insurance coverage at the worst possible time.

We think this is important enough to yell from the rooftops.

Before your next auto insurance renewal, ask your broker or insurer: what accident benefits are included, what is now optional, and what you may be giving up.

Ontario’s accident benefits rules change today.

As of July 1, many benefits that used to be included automatically with every Ontario auto policy are now optional.

That means if you’re injured in a collision, some benefits may only be available if they were specifically added to the policy before the crash.

This can affect drivers, passengers, pedestrians, cyclists, students, caregivers, and families.

We’ve prepared a plain-language guide explaining what changed, what remains mandatory, and why it matters if you or someone in your family is injured in a collision.
