IRCC increased the study permit proof of funds requirement to $23,448 for applications submitted on or after September 1, 2026. The old amount was $22,895. Check your GIC or bank balance before you file for the January intake.

Nobody tells PGWP holders this: there is no law stopping you from holding a PGWP and a study permit at the same time. If your program is longer than 6 months, you need a study permit, and the government never stops you from applying for one. Two things make it work: explain how you’ll manage work and study, and show your finances properly. IRCC’s own Help Centre confirms it, link in the first comment.

Most LMIA refusals don’t happen because of the job offer. They happen because of sloppy recruitment. Service Canada expects a decision on every Canadian citizen and PR resume you receive, and on Job Bank, officers can see exactly what you did with each one. Service Canada quietly updated the low-wage LMIA rules on August 18 — and it changes everything for small businesses. If you have fewer than 10 employees at a location, you now qualify for at least one low-wage position. Per location. Even households hiring a nanny or caregiver.

The C11 work permit is trending right now, but here is what most people get wrong about it. A C11 LMIA exempt work permit lets you come to Canada to run your own business, and it can bring your spouse and kids with you. But to qualify you must own at least half the business, which means IRCC treats you as self-employed. Self-employed work experience in Canada does not count toward the Canadian Experience Class, earns zero Canadian work experience points under Express Entry, and does not qualify for PNP skilled worker streams. If your plan is C11 work permit to Canada PR, you are building on experience IRCC will not count.

Ontario PNP does not apply its wage rule equally. Recent Ontario graduates can qualify at the low wage level, but only when the job offer is TEER 0 to 3. TEER 4 and 5 job offers must hit the Job Bank median wage, no exceptions, even for Ontario grads. Check your NOC and your region’s median before you rely on that offer.
