In our experience, people choose a spouse or oldest child by default. But an executor carries real legal responsibilities: filing with the court, managing assets, paying debts, and distributing the estate. It can take months or years.

In our experience, buyers sign pre-sale contracts without fully understanding what they have agreed to. Completion dates shift. Specifications change. Deposits are held for years. The contract often allows for all of this.

Having a lawyer review the contract before you sign is not a formality. It is the only time you have real leverage.
