The tax return says one thing. The spending tells a different story.

That gap can matter in support cases. If someone reports a low income but continues paying for expensive trips, vehicles, housing, or personal costs through a business, the court may look beyond the number on paper.

Our latest blog gets into lifestyle audits, imputed income, and why support should be based on the full financial picture, not the most convenient version of it.

A short marriage does not automatically mean the growth stays separate.

In M.P. v. P.P., the husband argued that equal division would be unfair because he came into the relationship with significant assets. The court disagreed, finding that BC’s excluded property rules had already protected the value he brought in.

The key issue became the increase in value during the relationship. That growth was still treated as family property, which is where these files can get complicated.

Connect Family Law helps clients understand what may be excluded, what may be shared, and what evidence is needed before property division becomes a bigger dispute.

🎙️ “They’re lying” comes up a lot in family law.

The harder part is proving what is actually happening.

On Family Law Unfiltered, Colin talks about allegations in parenting disputes and why courts look closely at patterns, records, context, and credibility before deciding what affects a child’s best interests.

If you received an inheritance during your relationship, you might assume it stays yours if you separate. That is not always how it plays out.

Inheritance can be excluded property, but the details matter once that money moves, grows, or gets mixed into family finances.

A few things Alex would want you to think about:

💡 Keep records showing what you received and when

💡 Be careful before putting inherited money into a jointly owned home or shared account

💡 Track what happened to the inheritance over time, especially if it increased in value

If inheritance is part of your separation, get clear on what may still be protected: https://heyor.ca/FfdwPb
