For some utilities, like water and gas, a meter reading is taken on the closing date, so you may receive a final bill after the sale has closed. Even though you've sold the home, you're still responsible for any outstanding balances. That's why it's important to ensure utility providers have your forwarding address so those final bills reach you. Buyers and their lawyers will follow up if they remain unpaid, so it's best to take care of them as soon as possible to avoid issues and interest charges!
