Ever wonder what it takes to become a licensed paralegal in Ontario?

It takes more than knowing the law! 📚 You must complete an accredited paralegal education program, successfully pass the Law Society of Ontario’s licensing examination, and meet the requirements for licensing.

So, what can a licensed paralegal actually do?

Paralegals can provide legal advice and representation within their authorized scope of practice, including:

⚖️ Small Claims Court
🚗 Provincial Offences Court, including traffic tickets
🏛️ Certain criminal matters
📋 Administrative tribunals, including the Landlord and Tenant Board, Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario, and Workplace Safety and Insurance Board

With the appropriate Family Legal Services Provider (FLSP) licence, eligible family law services are also available, including joint and uncontested divorces and certain child support motions.

Paralegals can help with legal advice, document preparation, negotiations, and representation — but not every legal matter falls within their scope of practice. Knowing those limits is an important part of protecting the public.

You won your Small Claims Court case.

But can you actually collect the money?

Not necessarily.

A Small Claims Court judgment is not a guarantee that you’ll get paid.

If the person or business doesn’t pay, or doesn’t have money or assets available, you may have to take additional steps to enforce the judgment.

💡 Before you sue, ask yourself:
“If I win, can I actually collect?”

And if you’ve already won but haven’t been paid…

That’s not necessarily the end of the story.

🍂❤️ What a day! ❤️🍂

Saturday’s Fall Family Food Drive was an incredible success!

We were so grateful to see our community come together for an afternoon of family fun, laughter, and giving back. From the bouncy castle and balloon twisting to pickleball, raffle prizes, and plenty of playground fun — there was something for everyone!

CAN THE LTB DELAY AN EVICTION?

Yes — but there are guidelines.

If a landlord does not agree to delay an eviction, the LTB now has specific requirements it must consider.

For most eviction matters, the Board must consider:
✔️ Would delaying the eviction be unfair to the landlord or other tenants?
✔️ Are there compelling reasons to delay it?
N12 and N13 applications have different considerations.

The reason for the eviction, the evidence, and the circumstances of the case all matter.

If you’re facing an eviction or LTB hearing, make sure you understand the rules that apply to your situation.

ChatGPT is an incredible tool. It can help explain things, organize information, brainstorm ideas and point you in a direction.

But when it comes to your specific legal situation, there’s a little more to it than typing a question into a chat box.

⚖️ Laws change.
📄 Facts matter.
🏛️ Procedures matter.
👀 And knowing what applies to your situation matters.

So yes — use ChatGPT. Ask questions. Do your research. Be informed.

But if ChatGPT tells you, “Your paralegal is wrong…” before you panic, maybe ask your paralegal first.

Getting a Document Notarized? A Little Preparation Goes a Long Way.

If you have an upcoming appointment with a Notary Public or Commissioner of Oaths, taking a few minutes to prepare beforehand can help make the appointment go smoothly.

The requirements can vary depending on what the document is for and who is requesting it. Some organizations have very specific requirements for how a document needs to be signed, witnessed, notarized or certified.

Before your appointment, make sure you know what the receiving organization is asking for and bring the necessary identification and documents with you.

And if you’re unsure about what you need, ask before your appointment rather than finding out afterward that something needs to be redone.

Thinking About Moving? Don’t Sign an N11 Too Quickly.

An N11 is an agreement between a landlord and tenant to end a tenancy. Once signed, it can have important consequences, so it’s important to understand what you’re agreeing to before you sign.

If you’re being offered money to leave, make sure the agreement clearly sets out what you’re receiving, when you’ll receive it, and when the tenancy will end.
