🇨🇦 Canada tightens TFWP rules

As of July 17, 2026, higher wage thresholds are now in effect for the low-wage Temporary Foreign Worker Program

In cities with 6%+ unemployment—including Edmonton, Calgary, Toronto, Vancouver, and Montréal—employers can no longer hire or renew low-wage TFWP positions below the new wage thresholds

The changes are expected to reduce low-wage LMIA approvals and make hiring foreign workers more challenging

If you’re an employer or a foreign worker, now is the time to review the new requirements

🇨🇦 Canada pauses new applications for the Parents and Grandparents Sponsorship Program

The Canadian government has announced a temporary pause on accepting new applications under the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP)

Here’s what this means:
• No new sponsorship applications are being accepted at this time
• Applications that were already submitted will continue to be processed
• In 2026, IRCC plans to grant permanent residence to up to 15,000 parents and grandparents from the existing application inventory

According to the government, the pause is intended to reduce the backlog, improve processing times, and make the system more efficient

❗ The Super Visa program remains available, so eligible parents and grandparents can still visit Canada for extended stays. The changes apply only to new PGP sponsorship applications

🇨🇦 New IRCC Processing Times Are Out

IRCC has released updated processing times, and there are some notable changes across different immigration programs.

📈 Some applications are being processed faster than before, while others are taking longer due to increased demand and application volumes.

Here’s what applicants should keep in mind:

✔️ PR card processing has improved
✔️ Certain work permit and study permit applications are moving more quickly
✔️ Some economic immigration streams, including Federal Skilled Worker and selected PNP categories, are experiencing longer wait times
✔️ Citizenship and family sponsorship timelines continue to vary

⚠️ Processing times published by IRCC are only estimates and can change based on your individual circumstances, supporting documents, security checks, and overall application volume.

Whether you’re planning to apply for a visa, study permit, work permit, permanent residence, or citizenship, having the right strategy from the beginning can help avoid costly delays.
