Improving IELTS for Study or Immigration
Improving your IELTS score requires a targeted, skill-by-skill strategy rather than general English practice. Below is a structured, practical approach used by high-scoring candidates (Band 7–8.5+), especially for immigration and Express Entry purposes.
Start With a Diagnostic Assessment
Before studying:
Take one full IELTS mock test (Cambridge IELTS 16–19)
Identify:
Weak module(s): Listening / Reading / Writing / Speaking
Band gap (e.g., 6.0 → 7.0 requires accuracy + structure, not vocabulary alone)
Tip: Most candidates lose marks in Writing Task 2 and Speaking coherence, not grammar alone.
Listening (Band Improvement Strategy)
Common Issues: Losing focus, spelling errors, missing plurals/numbers
What to Do:
Practice Section-wise (not full tests daily)
Use:
Cambridge IELTS tests
BBC 6-Minute English (for accents)
Write answers exactly as spoken
Train prediction skills (read questions before audio starts)
Daily: 30–40 minutes
Target: +1 band in 3–4 weeks
Reading (Especially for General Training)
Common Issues: Time management, True/False/Not Given confusion
What to Do:
Learn question types:
TFNG
Matching headings
Sentence completion
Do timed practice (20 minutes per passage)
Skim for keywords, scan for synonyms
Avoid reading every word
Focus on question-led reading
Writing (Highest Score Loss Area)
Task 1 (GT/Academic)
Learn standard formats:
Letter types (GT)
Graph descriptions (Academic)
Use simple but accurate grammar
Do not overuse complex vocabulary
Task 2 (Essay – 250 words)
Use this Band 7+ structure:
Introduction (paraphrase + opinion)
2 Body paragraphs (1 idea each)
Clear conclusion
Examiner looks for:
Task response
Coherence & cohesion
Grammar accuracy
Vocabulary relevance (not complexity)
Practice 2 essays per week with feedback
Speaking (Confidence Over Grammar)
Common Issues: Short answers, memorized responses, hesitation
What to Do:
Speak daily for 15–20 minutes
Record yourself answering:
Part 1: personal questions
Part 2: cue cards (2 minutes)
Part 3: opinions & examples
Use:
Linking words (however, for example, in my view)
Natural pauses (not silence)
Don’t memorize answers
Be clear, structured, and natural
Vocabulary & Grammar (Smart Practice)
Vocabulary:
Learn topic-based words:
Work, education, immigration, environment, technology
Use words in sentences, not lists
Grammar:
Focus on:
Tenses
Subject-verb agreement
Articles (a/an/the)
Sentence structure
20 minutes daily is enough if consistent
Study Plan (6-Week Example)
Daily (1.5–2 hours):
Listening: 30 min
Reading: 30 min
Writing / Speaking (alternate): 30–40 min
Weekly:
1 full mock test
Error analysis (most important step)
