Regional Red Deer Restorative Justice Society Vision:
Rural Red Deer communities value, support and utilize Restorative Justice processes as a first response to non-violent harms.

Regional Red Deer Restorative Justice supports youth, families, and communities across Central Alberta in addressing harm through meaningful dialogue, accountability, and healing. Mission:
To provide those who have been harmed an opportunity to share the impact of the harm with the person who has harmed them and to identify actions that would repair that harm. To provide young offenders from rural Red Deer communities with an opportunity to avoid entering the criminal justice system by accepting responsibility for their actions and repairing the harm caused to all others by those actions. Principles:
Focus on the harm not the rules broken
Restore trust through empowerment and responding to needs
Provide opportunities for open dialogue in a safe space
Encourage collaboration and reintegration not coercion and isolation. Key Objectives:
To provide a safe, timely, accessible, acceptable, appropriate and effective community-based response to crime as an alternate justice program. To provide high-quality service to all participants in a restorative process – person(s) harmed, wrongdoers and members of the wider community. To support satisfaction in results achieved with person(s) harmed, wrongdoers, referral agents and community
To increase level of empathy between person(s) harmed and wrongdoers. To increase level of accountability with wrongdoers. Actions:
Police officers may choose to refer an offender to the program as an alternative to filing a criminal charge within the criminal justice system. This option enables the offender, if they are accountable for their actions and prepared to repair the harm they have done, to avoid a criminal record and the downward spiral for their future frequently accelerated by entering the criminal justice system. The Crown Prosecutor may also refer a case (post-charge) to the RRDRJ program if deemed appropriate. Participating local schools may also make a direct referral to the program as a proactive approach to help address high risk situations.

As we work with youth on repair plans, art often becomes the way they process what happened, more than words can. But paint, sketchbooks, and good markers add up fast, and most families don't have room in the budget for it. This week, our "Steady Steps" goal is $250, so we can send art supplies home for every youth who needs a different way to express themselves.

The 5Rs of Restorative Justice

Restorative justice shifts the focus from punishment to healing, accountability, and community. At its heart are five core principles:

1️⃣ Relationship – Crime and conflict harm people and relationships. Restorative justice prioritizes repairing those connections rather than just breaking rules.

2️⃣ Respect – Every voice matters. The person harmed, the person responsible, and the community. All are treated with dignity throughout the process.

3️⃣ Responsibility – Accountability means facing the impact of your actions, not just serving a consequence. It's owning what happened and taking steps to make things right.

4️⃣ Repair – Healing requires action. This could mean an apology, restitution, community service, or a direct conversation; whatever genuinely addresses the harm done.

5️⃣ Reintegration – The goal isn't exile; it's restoring both the harmed and the responsible person back into the community as whole, contributing members.

Accountability is one of the biggest foundations of restorative justice. Without it, the other pillars, such as repair, relationship, and reintegration, crumble.

Restorative Justice starts with accountability. It starts with being able to say, "I messed up, and I see how my actions impacted others."

It's not easy. But it is foundational.

Today is about children who never came home.

Over a hundred years, Indigenous children were taken from their families and sent to residential schools. Many were hurt. Many never came back.

That grief doesn't have an expiration date. It's carried by survivors, by families, by communities to this day.

If you're carrying that today, you're not alone. We remember with you.

If you're learning about this today, just hold it. Let it matter.

As we get to know youth involved in a restorative justice file, we often learn that they love a sport. Soccer is a big one. When we ask if they play, they say "I'd like to but we can't afford it." or "I wish I could just go do drop-in but we can't afford it." So this week, our "Steady Steps" fundraising goal is $250, to be able to help these kids go play.

📣 WE’RE HIRING! — Interim Restorative School Culture Program Coordinator

Regional Red Deer Restorative Justice Society (RRDRJ) is looking for an organized, reliable and people-focused Interim Restorative School Culture Program Coordinator to join our team for a three-month temporary contract, starting immediately.

This is a great opportunity for someone who enjoys making sure all the pieces of a program actually come together. You’ll be the operational link between schools, facilitators and RRDRJ leadership, keeping schedules organized, communication flowing, documentation up to date and program data on track.

This is a coordination role, not a restorative practitioner position. You do not need restorative justice training to apply.

📍 The details

Term: 3-month temporary contract
Hours: Up to 20 hours/week, during school hours
Availability: Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday, 8:00 am–3:00 pm when schools are in session
Pay: $25/hour
Location: Hybrid, with some travel to Rimbey, Lacombe, Alix, Bentley, Penhold and Red Deer
Reports to: Executive Director

What you'll be doing

You’ll help keep our Restorative School Culture program running smoothly by:

✔️ Coordinating communication with school administrators
✔️ Scheduling and coordinating facilitators
✔️ Supporting Tier 2 facilitator assignments
✔️ Making sure facilitators have the plans and information they need
✔️ Tracking activities, documentation and follow-up
✔️ Ensuring vibe checks and other program information are submitted
✔️ Maintaining program trackers and grant-related data
✔️ Coordinating calendars, Teams meetings and program documents
✔️ Identifying things that are missing or falling through the cracks and following up!

Who we're looking for

You might have experience in:

• School administration or education support
• Nonprofit or community program coordination
• Project coordination
• Administrative coordination
• Scheduling and logistics
• Working with youth-serving organizations

Restorative justice experience is an asset, but not required.

What matters most is that you're organized, dependable, a strong communicator and someone who follows things through.

You need to be comfortable communicating with school administrators, working independently, managing multiple moving pieces and knowing when something needs to be brought to the Executive Director.

🚨 Important availability requirement

You must be available from 8:00 am–3:00 pm Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday when schools are in session, and must be fully available through December 18.

Please do not apply if you cannot meet this availability requirement.

How to apply

📧 Send your resume to [email protected]

Subject line: RSC Program Coordinator

In the body of your email, tell us:

“This is me, this is why I'm applying, and this is how I fit the job role.”

We’re looking for someone who can jump in, get organized and help keep an important school-based program moving.

Please share this post with someone who might be a great fit! ❤️
