January is Alzheimer’s Awareness Month in British Columbia. HSJ Lawyers is grateful to all the incredible dementia caregivers for the important work they do for their families and communities.

One of the kindest things you can do for your loved ones is to have the appropriate legal documents in place before any dementia diagnosis occurs. A Power of Attorney is a legal document that allows you to appoint someone (your “attorney”) to manage your finances and legal matters in the event of your incapacity. A Representation Agreement allows you to appoint a trusted person (“your representative”) to help make personal care and health care decisions for you if you become mentally incapable.

At HSJ Lawyers, we can help you plan for the unexpected by drafting thorough Estate Planning Documents, so you can choose who manages your life if you can’t. If you would like to book a consultation, please call our Estate Planning Department at (250) 565-8037.

Join HSJ Lawyers and the Province of British Columbia in celebrating Make a Will Week this year from October 20-26, 2025!

Make a Will Week is a great opportunity to schedule an appointment to discuss your estate planning needs. You should consider creating a Will if you have never done so before. Even if you have a Will in place, it’s a good idea to review it with a lawyer if you have experienced a major life event (new child, marriage or cohabitation, divorce, separation, property purchase, etc.), or if five or more years have passed since you signed your last Will, to ensure your Will effectively addresses any change in circumstances.

At HSJ Lawyers, we bring legal expertise and pragmatism to the area of estate planning. Not only can our lawyers assist you in planning your affairs should you pass away (Will) but we can also help you plan for situations in which you are alive but unable to make decisions for yourself (Power of Attorney and Representation Agreements). And your business needs? We’ve got that covered, too (Business Wills). Not sure if your current Will needs updating? You can book a consult with one of our estate lawyers to review your existing documents, or for general estate planning.

To schedule an appointment, give us a call at 250-565-8037 (Estate Planning Department) or submit your request online using our website’s online submission form at https://www.hsjlawyers.com/contact-us/

It’s never too late to provide for the people and charities you care about.

As always, we appreciate the opportunity to serve the Prince George community.

The Canadian Bar Association BC Branch wants to improve access to justice. It is reported that approximately 40% of family law cases in provincial court involve a person who is not represented by legal counsel.

A recently published report, "Agenda for Justice 2025," is a roadmap for government reforms and includes more than 30 recommendations.

We believe everyone should receive the help they need. Ask us about some affordable options.

We work closely with families in all types of circumstances, including estate planning. We have seen how unresolved grievances often resurface when an estate is divided, especially if someone feels they have been unfairly treated. While most parents hope for a smooth transition of their estate to their children or other loved ones, and some actively plan for it, the reality is that a lifetime of hard work and wealth-building can be overshadowed by misunderstandings and disputes.

Robin Craig provides some strategies for minimizing disagreements among family members when settling an estate.
