We are saddened to hear of the passing of Murray Sinclair, Anishinaabe member of Peguis First Nation, who served as chief commissioner of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada. He was a respected lawyer, judge, and senator. His powerful advocacy struck a deep chord. He addressed all of Canada when he stated: “We have described for you a mountain. We have shown you the way to the top. We call upon you to do the climbing.”

October 18 is Persons Day in Canada.

It marks the day in 1929 when the historic decision to include women in the legal definition of “persons” was handed down by Canada’s highest court of appeal. This gave some women the right to be appointed to the Senate of Canada and paved the way for women's increased participation in public and political life. Critically, this decision did not include all women, such as Indigenous women and women of Asian heritage and descent, but it did mark significant progress in the advancement of gender equality in Canada.
