Hosting a New Years Eve party tonight? This time of year is filled with laughter and joy, and sometimes the occasional drink or two of champagne!

In Canada, the law has not clearly established your responsibilities as a social host, but one thing is for sure: it’s never a bad idea to be responsible.

Have some water on hand and some delicious non-alcoholic beverages for your guests to enjoy, and of course, it always helps to have plenty of delicious food!

The holidays provide a time for gatherings to share laughter and make memories with your loved ones. But before inviting your friends and family over, make sure that your outside property is just as welcoming as your warm home.

In Ontario, property owners owe a duty to take reasonable care to make sure that people are reasonably safe on their property. This includes making sure that your property is protected from snow, ice, spills, and other conditions that could pose a danger to your guests.

Before hosting, please make sure that you shovel and salt your driveway and walkway. Let’s make this holiday season both fun and safe! ❄️

The answer may surprise you…Make sure you have house insurance or tenants’ insurance.

Your cutie patootie would certainly never do anything to hurt someone on purpose. But mistakes happen, and sometimes even the gentlest pet can become ill-tempered when scared, stressed, or ill.

If your dog bites someone in Ontario, the law will hold you liable – no matter what! Even if you were careful and responsible. Even if your pet has no history of aggressive behaviour. You will be on the hook for any damages that arise from the attack.

This makes it even more important to have home or tenants’ insurance. Insurance will step in to cover you for your liability if you are sued as a result of a dog bite.

It never hurts to be prepared for the worst!

Imagine this… driving across-country in the front seat of your vehicle, while enjoying a leisurely nap, getting lost in your favourite book, or binging your favourite tv show. The luxury of a private driver, without the cost. We’re on our way to such a futuristic existence.

But fully autonomous cars are not available for purchase in Canada just yet. Drivers must remember that driver-assist technologies are designed to assist, rather than replace, human drivers. In case of a collision during driver-assist mode, responsibility is likely to fall on the driver. Thus, maintaining vigilance and awareness while utilizing these features is crucial.

With an eye on the future, it’s essential to foresee the transition of accountability from human negligence to manufacturer negligence. The Insurance Bureau of Canada has proposed a combined insurance policy that covers both driver negligence and automated technology, along with data sharing among vehicle manufacturers, owners, and insurers.
