Did you know?

On May 24, 1995, an Ontario Court judge ruled that denying same-sex couples the right to adopt jointly violated Section 15 (equality rights) of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

The decision made Ontario the first Canadian province to make it legal for same-sex couples to adopt, followed closely by British Columbia, Alberta and Nova Scotia. In the next 16 years, the rest of Canada did the same.

In the case of Ahluwalia v. Ahluwalia, released today, the Supreme Court of Canada has recognized the tort of intimate partner violence, finding that existing torts do not fully address the harm caused by coercive control in intimate relationships.

Intimate partner violence is not only physical. Isolation, humiliation, surveillance, financial control, sexual coercion, and intimidation can all be part of intimate partner violence. It is coercive and controlling conduct, which limits a person’s ability to make choices and can make them unequal in the relationship.

Our team is reading the decision now and will share more as we learn more from experts such as the counsel involved in this case and .

Our hearts and gratitude go out to Ms. Ahluwalia, who bravely pursued this case to the Supreme Court of Canada.
