A dermatologist from St. John’s, NL, Dr. Ogunyemi is the first Black president in CMA history and among its youngest. His priorities include strengthening primary care, reducing administrative burden and advancing community-based care to better support patients across Canada.

As part of Vision Health Month, the Vision Health Partners’ Coalition (VHPC) is calling on the federal government to fund implementation of Canada’s National Strategy for Eye Care (Bill C-284, Royal Assent November 2024).

More than 2.2 million Canadians live with vision impairment, and the economic burden is projected to reach $56 billion by 2050. Yet one in three adults skips recommended eye exams, often resulting in late-stage diagnoses, that are more difficult and costly to treat. Vision loss affects children’s learning, workforce productivity, and older adults’ independence.

Dans le cadre du Mois de la santé visuelle, la Coalition des partenaires en santé oculaire (CPSO) demande au gouvernement fédéral de financer la mise en œuvre de la Stratégie nationale sur les soins oculaires du Canada (projet de loi C-284, sanction royale en novembre 2024).

Plus de 2,2 millions de Canadiennes et Canadiens vivent avec une déficience visuelle, et le fardeau économique associé devrait atteindre 56 milliards de dollars d’ici 2050. Pourtant, un adulte sur trois ne passe pas les examens de la vue recommandés, ce qui entraîne souvent des diagnostics tardifs plus complexes et
plus coûteux à traiter. La perte de vision a des répercussions sur l’apprentissage des enfants, la productivité de la main-d’œuvre et l’autonomie des personnes âgées.
