Seeking to fill a permanent full-time receptionist/legal assistant position for a
downtown boutique law firm.

Our firm

We are a law firm of 3 lawyers located in downtown Ottawa looking for a receptionist/legal assistant. We practice in the areas of family law and child protection. Additionally, another lawyer, who practices in family law, child protection and immigration law (not affiliated with our firm but sharing the same office space), will also be employing your services. This is a permanent full-time position.

Your role

As a receptionist/legal assistant, you will work closely with the lawyers, managing their daily activities and maintaining, as reception, direct contact with their clients. Reception duties will include scheduling and organizing meetings, reviewing various forms of correspondence in both official languages, and attending to various other office management duties including but not limited to:
● Word processing and spreadsheet software to prepare reports, memos, and documents (MS Word, and Google Workspace);
● Perform initial meetings with clients to obtain basic information and perform conflicts checks, and then pass on the file to the appropriate lawyer;
● Sort incoming mail, e-faxes and courier deliveries for distribution;
● Prepare and send outgoing mail, e-faxes and courier packages to clients, other
lawyers, and the Court;
● Forward incoming general e-mails to the appropriate staff member;
● Forward voicemail from the general mailbox to the appropriate lawyer;
● Purchase, receive and store the office supplies ensuring that basic supplies are
always available;
● Provide secretarial and administrative support to management and other staff;
● Coordinate the maintenance of office equipment.

What we are looking for from you

The successful candidate will have worked in an environment where s/he provided high-level support in an administrative function. Bilingualism, excellent organizational and computer skills are required. You will have developed exceptional multi-tasking
skills from having supported professionals in your past experience as receptionist/legal assistant. You must be able to work independently, as well as part of a cohesive team. Professional interpersonal skills and a high level of both oral and written
communication skills are also required.

What we are going to provide to the successful candidate

We anticipate growing our enterprise over the next few years. As such, there will be plenty of opportunity to grow with the firm. We are all team players, and are looking for this same quality in the successful candidate. Salary will be commensurate with experience.

Please note that, while there is a possibility for remote work, this is an in-person position at this time.

Start Date

As soon as possible, but no later than the last week of June.

Interview dates

In person or virtual interviews will be conducted immediately until a suitable candidate is found.

As we prepare to say goodbye to 2020 and hello to 2021, some of us have made new year's resolutions.

For those of us behind on child support payments, perhaps avoiding 4+ years incarcerated may be all the motivation we need to start paying back our arrears... and making good on those resolutions. This case seems to be one of the, if not the longest, prison sentences ever handed down for this type of behaviour.

Wishing everyone a Happy 2021 from your whole (growing!) team at Levy Law!

Joseph Power's sentence appears to be among the longest terms for violating child-support orders ever handed out in Canada

This is terrible news for the community. We only hope that it will come back better and stronger, and will be able to help even more people.

09/28/2020

We have dealt with a fair number of extremely high conflict cases including child abductions, threats or acts of harm to children, or violent acts against the (ex-)spouse. We have also dealt with parental alienation. These are all topics discussed or described in this article.

What we have never encountered yet -- thank goodness -- was a Judge, who told our victim clients to not describe these abuses or else it could be used against them as a parental alienation claim. In Ontario, s.24(4) of the Children's Law Reform Act explicitly states that a "court shall consider whether the person has at any time committed violence or abuse against" children, their ex, or some other groups.

Notwithstanding this, we must always be very careful weighing the benefits of describing these acts, to the potential risks. COVID-19 has, unfortunately, increased the number of domestic violence cases we have been seeing.

Victims of domestic abuse are encouraged not to discuss it in family court, or risk being accused of turning the children against the other parent.
