🚨 IRCC has confirmed that 175 people who traveled to Canada to attend the FIFA World Cup later filed asylum claims.
According to the published information, 26,111 visitors indicated in their temporary resident visa applications that the purpose of their trip was to attend the tournament. Of those, 175 later initiated an asylum claim after entering Canada.
While this represents less than 1% of all visitors, the news has reignited an important discussion.
Canada needs to remain a country that welcomes tourists, family visitors, international students, and skilled workers. At the same time, it also relies on the integrity of its temporary immigration system and on applicants using their visas for the purpose for which they were issued.
When cases raise concerns about the use of temporary visas, it is natural for immigration authorities to strengthen their screening and assessment processes. Unfortunately, those who often feel the impact are applicants with entirely legitimate reasons to visit Canada.
