On February 23, 2022, I will be taking part in the Federation of Ontario Law Associations’ (FOLA) Virtual Lobby Day. Over 40 small and sole practising lawyers from every region in Ontario will spend the day meeting with Ministers’ staff, MPPs (both government and opposition), and the Attorney General to discuss a wide variety of justice issues.

As President of the Country of Carleton Law Association, I will be participating in the Criminal Law & Legal Aid Roundtables and am meeting with the MPP for Ottawa Centre, Joel Harden to discuss Criminal Law. Our Vice President Sean May will also join us. Sean and I will focus on the lack of telecommunications at the Ottawa-Carleton Detention Centre, which was built in 1972.

While some of FOLA’s issues relate to measures taken as a result of the COVID pandemic, some issues (such as legal aid funding, matters related to family law, and courthouse staffing) pre-date such measures.

ABOUT FOLA
FOLA is a non-profit organization that represents Ontario’s 46 Law Associations (plus the Toronto Law Association) and, through them, 12,000 practising lawyers from all regions of the province. Most of FOLA’s members are sole practitioners who run their own firms or practise in small firms.

ABOUT THE COUNTY OF CARLETON LAW ASSOCIATION
We are Ottawa’s largest law association and number about 1,700 members, with lawyer, paralegal, judicial and student members. Most CCLA members are lawyers in private practice, and many work in the areas of criminal and family law, and accept Legal Aid certificates. We are also a non-profit organization, and we have a modern library and staff at the Ottawa Courthouse.

As President of the County of Carleton Law Association I was pleased to accept our Award for Outstanding Philanthropic Group last night. We were being honoured for raising nearly $100,000 for the Ottawa Food Bank in 2021. Here I am with Jennifer Walker, our Chief Librarian, Justice Beaudoin, Tricia Ross (OFB), Lawyer Mitchell Kitigawa and Hilary Evans (OFB). I started the Courthouse Food Drive nearly 20 years ago, when I was President of the Defence Counsel Association of Ottawa. It now extensively engages our legal community and law firms and legal groups compete with one another in "Firms Filling Fridges", which was an amazing way of raising funds on-line during COVID. Our Executive Director Rick Haga watched this live, and shares in our success. Thanks, Rick.

I am just back from Chairing the Drinking and Driving Panel at the annual Criminal Law Conference at Montebello. I was on the planning committee, on behalf of the County of Carleton Law Association.

Next week I am lecturing to paralegals at their conference. My topics are Debtor Examinations and Contempt Hearings.

I am Chairing the drinking and driving panel at the Criminal Law Conference at Montebello tomorrow. This is a complex area of law, and we have an impressive panel with a judge, a Crown and Anna Brylewski, who used to practise in my office.
