Not every lawyer takes the traditional route. Some come to the profession after decades in entirely different fields, including policing, military service, journalism and the public service. The experiences they carry in with them often shape how they practise law.

Today, Kyla M. Lee, Chair of the CBA's Sexual and Gender Diversity Alliance Section, will appear before the Senate Human Rights Committee as part of its study of Bill C-9, the Combatting Hate Act.

The CBA supports the bill's objectives but warns that some provisions may be overly broad, risking unintended consequences for lawful protest and free expression.

🌍 Today is the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia. It is a moment to celebrate sexual and gender diversity, recognize resilience, and recommit to ending the violence and discrimination that persist based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

Last year, the CBA launched its Understanding Gender Diversity and Inclusion training - a free, accredited, self-paced program for legal professionals looking to deepen their understanding of gender diversity and better serve trans and gender-diverse clients with respect and competence.

A second, practice-area-specific module is also in the works!

Our 2026 journalism fellow Erik Pindera is in the field preparing his series on access to justice in the North.

He recently travelled to Thompson, Manitoba, where he met with lawyers, justice system officials, and Indigenous community justice workers to discuss the challenges facing remote communities and the ways First Nations can shape their own justice processes. And next month, he will be in St. Theresa Point, a fly-in community in Manitoba's northeast, sitting in on circuit court proceedings.

The CBA and the Law Commission of Canada are proud to support his work. We look forward to reading his reporting this fall in the Winnipeg Free Press.
