Americans With Canadian Ancestry May Now Qualify for Canadian Citizenship
Bill C-3 Opened the Door Across Generations
If you were born in the United States and have a Canadian parent, grandparent, or even great-grandparent, you may now be eligible to reclaim Canadian citizenship.
For decades, Canada restricted citizenship by descent to only the first generation born outside Canada — blocking millions of U.S.-born descendants from obtaining citizenship and a Canadian passport.
That restriction is gone.
What Changed?
On December 15, 2025, Bill C-3 became law in Canada and removed the generational limit on citizenship by descent.
Now:
✔ No generational ceiling
✔ Citizenship through grandparents and great-grandparents allowed
✔ Retroactive recognition for many Americans previously denied
✔ Proof of lineage is the key requirement
Immigration Canada has already begun approving second- and third-generation Americans.
Who May Qualify?
You may be eligible if:
• Your parent was Canadian (even if born in the U.S.)
• Your grandparent was born in Canada
• Your great-grandparent was Canadian
• Your family line connects you to a Canadian citizen
If your ancestry traces back to Canada, you should explore your eligibility.
What Documents Are Needed?
To apply for proof of Canadian citizenship, you must provide:
• Your birth certificate
• Your parents’ birth certificate
• Your grandparents’ birth certificate
• Proof your Canadian ancestor was born in Canada or naturalized
Each generation must be documented. No proof = no approval.
Important Note for Future Generations
For children born abroad after Dec 15, 2025:
Canadian parents born outside Canada must show 1,095 days of physical presence in Canada before passing citizenship.
(This rule does not affect Americans reclaiming citizenship now.)
