Prohibition on the Purchase of Residential Property by Non-Canadians Act:

The Government of Canada released a statement yesterday that the ban on foreign ownership of Canadian housing, which is currently set to expire on January 1, 2025, will be extended to January 1, 2027. Foreign commercial enterprises and people who are not Canadian citizens or permanent residents will continue to be prohibited from purchasing residential property in Canada.

If you own property in the City of Ottawa, do not forgot to submit your occupancy declaration. The deadline to declare this year is March 21, 2024.

Declarations ARE mandatory. If the declaration is not made on time, you will be subject to the Vacant Unit Tax and will be added to your final tax bill in June. The VUT is a rate of 1% of your property's assesses value.
