Happy 2024!
I moved offices (within the same building) over the holidays. What a great excuse to purge the unwanted and unnecessary, and a great way to usher in a new season.

The move was a family affair as my spouse is the ‘picture hanger-extraordinaire’ and my daughter helped set up my desk and left me a cute note that I didn’t see until this morning! ❤️

I have my first in-person mediation session in over two years this afternoon. It will be a challenge to switch from virtual mode. At least I remembered to book a breakout space and bring snacks! (Not pictured: Water and Coffee!)

This is a fantastic opportunity to find out more about what collaborative divorce is all about! You’ll also bust a gut laughing and raise funds for a wonderful charity at the same time!

SPLITS & GIGGLES is an evening of comedy about family dynamics, single parenting and starting over brought to you by Collaborative Divorce Ottawa. All funds raised will go to our charity partner: Parents' Lifeline of Eastern Ontario (PLEO).

On the benefits of mediation and collaborative practice in coming up with practical solutions: "The law requires individuals to find income, but Boutet says it is difficult to determine the law in certain situations, such as deciding how many gigs or hours per gig a person should take. So, collaborative negotiation must analyze one family at a time to measure if a person is working sufficiently in the gig economy."

Income demands are more complex as people work unconventional hours: family lawyer

Three people you should let know about your recent separation:
Separation is a stressful time and most people want to keep it to themselves. However, you may benefit from letting the following people know about the situation:

1. Your child’s school. This is particularly true if there is significant conflict between you and your former spouse. The school should be updated with any changes in emergency contacts, pick up and drop off schedules, attendance at teacher conferences, etc. School administrators should definitely know if there have been criminal charges laid with any restraining provisions in place for either parent. Your child’s teacher would probably also appreciate a head’s up on what’s going on at home, so s/he can look out for any signs that your child may be having difficulty coping with the transition.

2. Your mortgage company. This is a time of significant instability around bill payments. If you let your bank/mortgage company know that you’re in the process of separation, or if your house is on the market, in some cases you may be extended a small grace period on your mortgage payment(s) while you are getting new financial arrangements in place. But if the mortgage company doesn’t know what’s going on, they can’t work with you. This would also apply to your utility accounts.

3. Your bank. If you have joint lines of credit or other joint accounts with your spouse and you are in a high-conflict separation, let your bank know. If either spouse can withdraw monies from the account, see whether you can change the authorization to include both signatures when withdrawing monies over a certain threshold. The last thing you want is for a former partner to “max out” the line of credit and leave you paying the interest. Not all banks have a solution for this problem, but speaking to your account manager would be a great first step in trying to protect yourself against this type of situation.

For this year, I am supporting children and youth facing mental health challenges by donating to PLEO – Parent’s Lifeline. I know that this offers a gift of not just help, but hope, and I’m asking that you join me to show these kids and their families that our community has their back.
It’s easy to do, and it will make a meaningful difference: You can click here to make your donation: https://www.pleo.on.ca/support-pleo/
A gift of $20 provides a family with support through their Parent Support Groups.
A gift of $50 provides a family with support through their Parents’ Helpline.
A gift of $250 provides a family with intensive support through their Mobile 1-on-1 Service.

I’ll tell you more about why I am compelled to support these families. 1 in 5 children and youth are facing mental health challenges. They depend on their parents to help them find their way forward. But when a family is drowning in the struggle of a child’s mental health challenges, even just keeping their heads above water seems out of reach. It doesn’t have to be this way.

They need support. That is what PLEO does, and it works: 90% of the parents they help are better able to support their child, access services, cope with challenges, and feel less alone, isolated, and stressed.

We have an opportunity here to unlock a child and family’s capacity to find their way forward. Thank you for your consideration.
