Job Vacancies Across Canada Hit A Record High

Job vacancies throughout Canada hit a record high of nearly one million open positions in this
year’s second quarter, according to the latest data from Statistics Canada.

Between April and June of this year, Canadian employers were scrambling to fill a record
997,000 vacant jobs, up 4.7% from the previous first quarter and 42.3% higher than in the
second quarter of 2021.

Vacancies rose in six provinces, led by Ontario’s 6.6% increase. Nova Scotia, British Columbia,
Manitoba, Alberta, and Quebec also saw a growing number of job vacancies during Q2.

PGwp: PGWP holders can apply for a new open work permit
Certain expired PGWP holders will now be able to apply for a new open work permit. Canada has released instructions for how certain Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) holders can apply for a new open work permit or extend the one they currently have.

Immigration Minister Sean Fraser initially announced the special measure in April. Last week, the minister confirmed that a technical issue caused the delay in releasing further instructions.

The instructions are relevant to you if your PGWP expires between September 20, 2021 and December 31, 2022. Normally, PGWPs are a one-and-done deal. International student graduates of eligible full-time programs can get an open work permit for up to three years. However, the new measure will allow eligible PGWP holders to extend their work permit or apply for a new open work permit for an additional 18 months.

IRCC says you may not apply for this work permit at a port of entry. All work permit applications for this public policy must be submitted online by December 31, 2022.

In order to be eligible for this process, foreign nationals must meet all the statutory eligibility and admissibility requirements and have an offer of employment. Workers’ spouses, common-law partners, and dependent children are also eligible for the faster processing that includes visitor visas, work permits, and study permits. The worker does not need to apply for a visa or electronic travel authorization (eTA) as that is issued when the work permit application is processed.

Studying in Canada:
In order to study in Canada, you require a letter of acceptance from your designated learning institution, a valid passport or travel document, and proof that you can support yourself financially while you are in Canada.

Whether you’re looking to complete your undergraduate or postgraduate studies there are some things you need to know before you apply:
Most foreign nationals will need to obtain a study permit before studying in Canada at a designated learning institution (DLI). A study permit is not a VISA and does not grant you entry into Canada. Once your study permit is approved you will be issued a VISA for entry into the country if you are from a visa requiring country.
n order to be eligible for a study permit, you must be enrolled at a DLI and prove you have enough funds to pay for your tuition as well as living expenses. If family members are coming with you, you must also show proof that their living expenses will be covered as well. You must also not have a criminal record and be in good health (a medical exam may be required). If your program is less than 6 months in length, you may not need a study permit.
Your study permit will be valid for the length of your program plus an additional 90 days. You may use those 90 days to make plans to leave the country or to apply to extend your stay in Canada. You may go back home while studying in Canada, you’ll simply need to show proof that you are enrolled in school upon re-entry into the country along with a valid entry visa if you are from a visa requiring country.
You may be eligible to work on or off-campus depending on the conditions on your study permit. You can only begin working once your studies start, you cannot begin work prior to your program starting. Upon graduation, you may be eligible to stay and work in Canada on a post-graduation work permit (PGWP) which can vary in length depending on the length of your program of study. The experience you gain while working in Canada post-graduation may help you qualify for permanent residence.
