Alberta Grazing Leaseholders Association

Alberta Grazing Leaseholders Association AGLA works to represent and advocate for the interests of Alberta's Crown land grazing leaseholders

Alberta Grazing Leaseholders Association (AGLA) advocates for the rights of all grazing leaseholders in Alberta. We strive to be the voice of reason in matters of land use, property rights and surface rights. Since the inception of AGLA in 1998, we have actively represented the interests of leaseholders provincially, nationally and locally.

We will be asking for resolutions to be voted on at the AGM in February. It is through the resolution process that we take direction from the membership. While AGLA is happy to see the response from CFIA to pause the publication of the proposed regulations, we hope that when they say concerns will be "taken into consideration" they will be open to changes to the regulation to ensure that the resulting regulations are truly necessary, workable and beneficial to the long-term sustainability of the cattle industry.

Thank-you to all the leaseholders who came out to Carrot Creek yesterday! You are who and why we do what we do. It was great to have the chance to visit.

Next leaseholder regional meeting is in January. Stay tuned for details!

ATTN TABER AREA RESIDENTS: The MD of Taber is proposing a bylaw to authorize borrowing up to $6 million to convert 23 quarters of municipally-held native grasslands into irrigated cropland; effectively taking that land away from ranchers to make it available for annual crops.
In response to the proposal, the Oldman Lease Holders Association (OLHA) is being revived to advocate for the collective interests of local leaseholders. The association is specifically concerned about the bylaw's potential to set precedent regarding the treatment of other MD of Taber grazing leases. The OLHA will work to prevent native grass grazing leases from being irrigated and sold, a practice that would threaten the long-term sustainability of their land and operations.
A successful petition against the borrowing by-law requires the signatures of nearly 800 electors. The petition must be filed with the Chief Administrative Officer before the petition period closes on September 24, 2025.
Community members are urged to learn more about the environmental and financial implications of this project and to sign the petition to prevent the bylaw from receiving its second and third readings. For more information please contact Daryl Johnson at 1-403-654-7074.

The Alberta government has announced some grazing relief for areas of the province affected by drought. Grazing disposition holders who have capacity can accommodate cattle owned by other producers for the remainder of the 2025 grazing season without submitting applications. The additional grazers must be reported to the agrologist within seven days.
Additionally, application for haying or temporary grazing on vacant public lands can be submitted and will be reviewed on a case by case basis.
For more information on the process and to apply, contact your agrologist. Agrologist contact info can be found here: https://geospatial.alberta.ca/portal/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=9fb06be568ac4365b62bbb08c56742b9
