Officially framed as a "training initiative" for consular officers on public charge assessments and vetting. Applicants with scheduled interviews have been told by email their appointments are postponed, with new dates to be announced later. No date given for when normal scheduling resumes.

🇺🇸 200,000 asylum seeker visa cancellations: The administration is planning to revoke visas for up to 200,000 asylum seekers currently in the US, targeting B-1/B-2 business and tourist visas issued between 2016 and 2026. Would be the largest mass revocation in US history if it goes through.

🇺🇸 H-1B fee to $103,265: This is separate and newer than the original $100k proclamation from September 2025 (which got court-blocked in June 2026). This is a new DHS proposal for a $103,265 application fee, announced a day before the appointment pause, and now heads into a 30-day public comment period before taking effect -so not locked in yet.

🇨🇦 Canada is responding to new U.S. tariffs with targeted countermeasures and billions in support for Canadian workers and businesses.

Following the U.S. decision to impose a 50% tariff on $27.6 billion of Canadian goods, Canada will introduce matching counter-tariffs on U.S. products, effective September 8.

The government is also launching a $7.5 billion package of new and enhanced measures, including:

• $1.5 billion for small and medium-sized businesses through the Regional Tariff Response Initiative
• $500 million in new liquidity support through BDC’s Pivot to Grow program
• $2 billion for the new Canada Strong Diversification Fund
• $3.5 billion in Rapid Response Supports for Workers and Employers
• New support for worker retention, retraining, EI flexibilities and workplace training

The measures are aimed at helping Canadian businesses manage tariff-related pressures and supporting workers through this period of uncertainty.

The PEQ program got shut down last year. That sparked protests across the province. It's back now, but only for 2 years.

The next government has to fix tension with Ottawa, decide how many immigrants Quebec should accept, and figure out what to do about the Canada-Quebec immigration agreement from 1991 - under which, Quebec sets its own criteria for economic immigrants and skilled workers.

Business groups want more immigrants. Most of the public wants fewer. Whoever wins has to pick a side. This is one of the biggest issues on the ballot this year.

🇨🇦 Asylum claims jumped from under 24,000 in 2016 to over 114,000 in 2025. Nearly all of that growth comes from people already in Canada on temporary status, mainly students and workers, not new arrivals at the border.

The acceptance rate rose from 67 percent to 80 percent over the same period. Average processing takes 19 months, and the backlog now sits at 277,000 cases, worth roughly 4.6 billion dollars. While claims are pending, people get free legal aid, housing support and healthcare. For someone whose study or work permit is expiring, filing a claim buys time and a shot at PR. Canada plans to grant PR to about 115,000 Protected Persons in 2026 and 2027 alone.

Bill C-12 tightens some rules but does not touch this core incentive. The memo points to the UK and Denmark, both of which moved to temporary, renewable protection instead of automatic permanent settlement. Denmark cut claims by over 90 percent this way. The argument is that removing the guarantee of permanent status is what actually reduces claim volume, not faster processing or stricter screening alone.

🇨🇦 UHIP raised its rate from $66/month to $79/month, effective September 1, 2026. That's $792 to $948 per year, up $156.

Last year's increase was under 5%. This year's 19.7% jump is about 4x that size, after a stretch where rates barely moved. UHIP cites rising healthcare costs and claims volume as the reason, per their official update.

It also lands alongside federal study permit caps and tighter PGWP eligibility, so it's one more cost pressure on a shrinking pool of incoming students.
