Quebec Manor Housing Co-operative in the news! Great history and lovely building filled with great cooperators.
This old beauty has been there for just over a century now.
Low interest rates, high interest rates - it just does not seem to matter to the long suffering renters. So if interest rates don't seem to matter, what are you left with? Local government?
According to data from the Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation, condos owned and rented out by private investors make up about 40 per cent of all market-rate apartments in Metro Vancouver.
I agree!

The latest from The Office of the Privacy Commissioner on video surveillance on rental properties. Lesson: tell your tenants what you are doing in writing and provide a contact.

Rental Protection Fund finds a CEO. I'm expecting great things, including preservation and protection of co-operative housing.
New CEO Katie Maslechko sees fund having ‘ripple effect’ on community housing
Aging in place is a big deal in housing co-ops as original cooperators get older and try to remain in affordable units in urban centres, often becoming over housed as family members depart.
Faced with a need for accessible homes so that older members can stay in their communities, three Ontario housing co-ops have built new homes.
This sounds like a really good idea. There would be a lot of knowledge around the table.
The coalition of organizations in BC including BCREA, BCNPHA, and LandlordBC are calling on the Province to create a housing roundtable.
Making it easier to install EV changers in a strata corporation. Make sure you have proper bylaws in place!
More people living in strata buildings will soon be able to charge their electric vehicles (EVs) at home as the Province has introduced legislation to make it easier for strata corporations and owners to install charging stations.
Sub-metering of utilities remains a live issue in properties. Is the sub-metering company a landlord? Wow! It's like our many property management clients who get named as the landlord on RTB applications.
For several months, the BC Utilities Commission has been investigating Wyse Meter Solutions, a private company that charges Nanaimo renters directly for water.

This is not a loophole. Nor is it bizarre. Nor does it belong before the Tribunal - because there is no dispute. It's the Ministry trying to deflect on a rule they allowed that has been with us for a long time.
The BC Housing Ministry called what happened to one Vancouver renter bizarre, but didn't step in to help a mom whose rent went up.
I had not considered this perfect storm - we need more immigration to address the labour shortage to cool inflation but there is no where to house the counted and uncounted newcomers thus putting upward pressure on rents and inflation.
Canada’s explosive population growth from immigration is causing rents to surge in its biggest cities. And there’s another problem: The country isn’t even properly counting the number of people who need homes.
What a great idea! Way to go .
The Downtown Eastside building for non-profit staff could be one fix for the housing crisis, if employers are willing to make the investment
Well this is good news for a sustainable industry.
BC has no vacancy control, meaning that when a tenant moves out of a unit, the landlord can set any fee they want for future occupants.
As of November 1, 2023, minimum CRF contribution rises to 10% of annual budget. Form B is amended as of April 1, 2023 to include insurance information.
As of Nov. 1, 2023, developers and strata corporations will be required to contribute a minimum amount of 10 per cent of annual operating expenses annually, up from the current five per cent.
I don't have all the stats, but I would have to believe that there are organizations better equipped to provide this service and that the City funds would be better used elsewhere.
“The reality is, not only is it on average one call per day … 60 per cent were other issues related to other jurisdictions,” ABC Coun. Rebecca Bligh said Friday.
Protecting affordable housing through the new Rental Protection Fund.
More renters in B.C. will be protected from housing speculators and profiteers through the creation of a new $500-million Rental Protection Fund dedicated to protecting tenants and preserving affordable rental homes for decades.

CHF Canada releases report: Housing Co-ops are historically more affordable than rentals.
Today, a new report comparing housing charges (rents) in co-op housing with rents in similar private market rental buildings was released. It looked at Vancouver, Victoria, Edmonton, Toronto and Ottawa between 2006 and 2021. The report shows that rent trends in non-profit co-op housing differs drama...
Would'nt this be great!
Vancouver councillor and mayoral candidate Colleen Hardwick says a total $1.5-billion co-op plan could create 6,000 units on city-owned land — and break even over time.
Interesting comment at the end about residential landlords getting out of the business. Government policy and lack of proper RTB funding is pushing us toward less rental stock, more competition, higher rents - and continued exodus from the GVRD.
Property owner Araz Ounchi says he's been left in a financial lurch after his tenants stopped paying rent.
This absurd - of all the excellent recommendations and demands made by UBCM on accessible and affordable housing, this is the headline chosen by CBC.
In countries around the world, clothes are often dried outdoors under the warm sun, but in B.C. strict bylaws keep many residents from setting up a clothesline or putting out a drying rack.
