New eligibility requirements for asylum claims

Canada’s asylum system protects people who can demonstrate they face a real risk of persecution or serious harm. Two new eligibility requirements are now in effect and will apply to all claims made on or after June 3, 2025:

Asylum claims made more than one year after someone’s first entry into Canada after June 24, 2020, won’t be referred to the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada (IRB), regardless of whether the person has since left and returned.
Asylum claims from people who enter Canada between ports of entry along the Canada–US land border and who make a claim after 14 days won’t be referred to the IRB.
These new eligibility requirements will reduce pressure on the asylum system, protect it against sudden increases in claims, close loopholes and deter people from claiming asylum as a shortcut to regular immigration pathways.

Ottawa will resume Express Entry draws early July
---------------------------------------------------------
On April 22, 2022, Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), announced the Government’s plans to resume Express Entry draws in early July. As a result of the temporary pause, Canada has diminished more than half of the federal high-skilled processing inventory, from 111,900 people in September 2021 to just 48,000 people by March 2022. According to the announcement, the inventory will be further reduced by July 2022 to help the Government return to the service standards.

New Brunswick accepted 80 internationally educated nurses.

On April 11, 2022, the Government of New Brunswick announced that the province has accepted 80 internationally educated nurses since the launch of the recruitment program in 2020. The pilot was created to support internationally educated nurses as they apply for immigration and help the province tackle the labour shortage in New Brunswick. As of now, an additional 150 internationally educated nurses have been identified and will be connected with New Brunswick employers for hiring opportunities over the coming 12 months.
