So, what do you need before meeting with a lawyer?

Whenever a potential client meets with a lawyer, it's important to remember that lawyer-client communications and meetings are private and confidential. Such communications and meetings are protected by solicitor-client privilege. The lawyer cannot discuss the case or matter with third parties without the client’s consent.

There are certain exceptions to this general rule. However, solicitor-client privilege allows the lawyer and client to freely discuss the case or matter and for the client to get proper legal advice from the lawyer. Sometimes, the lawyer will need to review the documentation and materials—and review the applicable law—in order to provide a legal opinion. It's important for the client to be as organized as possible for the first meeting.

If you've been served with court documentation, please bring that documentation to the meeting. Likewise, if there have been previous court orders made with respect to your matter, please bring that to the initial meeting as well.
