A great time was had at the PIABC Conference in Whistler BC as shown in the nice write up by the organizers.

Cyber Research at the conference

Attendees listened to Norman Wilhelm speak on cyber research. Mr. Wilhelm was fascinating and brought a perspective on how fast this field is changing. What we thought we knew about cyber research and resources changes month by month. He provided a review of the tools we used to rely on that are no longer there, have been bought out and some new ones that replace them. The alarming issue for PI’s is that companies are now aggregating data and attaching fee structures that only the larger companies or ones that do this type of work exclusively can afford.

Mr. Wilhelm’s background is in intelligence with the Canadian armed forces and he had a special interest in photogrammetry, the science of making measurements from photographs, especially for recovering the exact positions of surface points. He currently works with Toddington International. He took the people at the conference through a tour of Google 3D maps and how he was able to locate a person in a large city in eastern USA using a photo from Facebook taken from the balcony of a suite. He identified several reference points, direction based on shadows and had an area in a suburb of the city as a starting point. He narrowed down the location with building size references and angles to locate the suite where the photo originated.

It appears that if you have not taken a refresher in the past year on cyber research, you are out of date. One gem he provided is locatefamily.com. This site has produced addresses and phone numbers of people who thought they had escaped the grid and is worth checking if you are trying to locate someone.
