HARVEST SEASON APPROACHES IN SDG COUNTIES
As we head into harvest season in SDG Counties, drivers will likely see an increased number of tractors and farm machinery travelling on rural roads.
According to the Ontario Federation of Agriculture, slow moving vehicles are 3.8 to 4.8 times more likely to be involved in a fatal collision per kilometre on the road than other motor vehicles.
This is why it’s crucial for drivers to stay alert and practice safe driving habits when travelling near farm machinery.
Tips for sharing the road with farm equipment (from the AORS - Association Of Ontario Road Supervisors)
🚜Watch for the red and orange triangle – This Slow-Moving Vehicle sign appears on the back of equipment that can’t legally travel faster than 40 km/h. Slow down and keep a safe distance when approaching farm machinery on the road.
🚜Pass only when safe to do so – Farm equipment is wide and may require more road space. Always ensure you have a clear line of sight before initiating a pass, and avoid passing on hills, curves or near intersections.
🚜Keep an eye out for debris or changing road conditions – Mud, gravel and other debris can fall from tractor tires, and dust from gravel roads can reduce visibility. Adjust your speed as necessary as conditions change.
🚜Be courteous – Remember that farmers work long hours to support their communities and put food on the table. Always slow down when following farm equipment - a few extra minutes of patience goes a long way.
